Game 93
(2/13/10)
Orion vs. Macon Meridian (Boy's Basketball)
Riverton Shootout
Another anticipated matchup between ranked teams. Macon Meridian is the defending Class 1A state champions, and bring back three starters from that squad. Orion has some tall trees in the post, bolstered by (6'5" sophomore) Tanner Williams.
We had a few Orion fans in the chat room, cheering on the Chargers. Meridian jumped out to a 12-11 first quarter lead, behind hot shooting from Trent Swigert. Tanner Williams was held to without a field goal in the first quarter, but went (3-4) from the free throw line.
Orion only mustered three field goals in the entire second quarter, and trailed 23-21 at halftime. Williams hit a couple back-to-back baskets late in the quarter, and finished the first half with 9 points.
It was all Meridian in the third quarter, as the Hawks outscored Orion 16-8 in that frame. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, my pen went out. I did the old scribble routine to get it back, but to no avail. I scoured through the equipment bag (which ALWAYS has extra pens), but found nothing. I settled on using my highlighter, but quickly gave up on that, so I have ineffective stats on the fourth quarter of this game.
What I do know, is that the shootout was running five minutes AHEAD of schedule, ended up being delayed 15 minutes for the start of the last game, because of this one game. According to my time management, it was 7:18 p.m. when the clock (4th quarter) had 2:50. The game's final horn sounded at 7:32 p.m. Macon Meridian beat Orion 54-46, as the game seemed like it would never end. I mentioned on the broadcast it felt like it was Tuesday already.
