Game 94: Princeton vs. Breese Central (Boy's Basketball)

Game 94
(2/13/10)
Princeton vs. Breese Central (Boy's Basketball)
Riverton Shootout

The marquee matchup is here, delayed by about 15 minutes due to the length of the Orion/Meridian game. Following that game, I ran out to my car to grab a much-needed ink pen. I then, headed towards the hospitality room for a bottle of water, and then headed back up to prep for the final game of the day.

Breese Central came in ranked (#6) in Class 2A, while Princeton is ranked (#9) in Class 2A. Earlier in the evening, I had packed up all of my equipment and moved it in anticipation of a heavy crowd. In shootouts past, there has been trouble finding a seat. Not so in 2010. You could count the number of fans in each balcony on one hand, outside a few students from each school standing over the balcony. About half of the seats on each side of the bleachers were empty. I attribute a few things to the low turnout. Number one is that basketball statewide is down this year tremendously (in my opinion), and secondly, the matchups weren't as "sexy" as in years past. No top ranked teams were at Riverton this year.

After one quarter, Princeton led Breese Central 12-7. The Cougars did not make a field goal in the opening frame, scoring all 7 points at the free throw line (7-8). Field goal shooting would improve greatly in the second quarter, with Breese Central pouring out 18 second quarter points, forcing a 25-25 tie at halftime.

David Wiegmann came unglued in the second quarter, scoring eight points from the field, and had 12 points at the break. Garrett Gaffner had 9 points for the Cougars. The Tigers were led by Ryne Vrana and Brock Schmidt with 6 points each.

Princeton would regress in the second half, scoring just 8 points in the third quarter. Breese Central put up 15 third quarter points, seven coming from Wiegmann. He finished the night with 21 points, and was named the game's MVP.

It was a low scoring fourth quarter, with the Cougars holding a 8-4 edge in scoring in the last eight minutes. After Wiegmann, Garrett Gaffner scored 19 points. Princeton was led by Ryne Vrana's 14 points. Breese Central would claim the 50-37 win over Princeton. Vrana also scored the lone Princeton field goal in the fourth quarter on a one-hand slam dunk. I was actually surprised he was not issued a technical foul, as he hung on the rim a second too long.
