Game 16: Springfield vs. United Township (Girl's)

Game 16
Springfield vs. United Township (Girl's)
Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament
(11/20/10)

One team I was eager to see was the Springfield Senators. Coach Brad Scheffler says this is the deepest team he has had in his eight seasons as head coach. Zahna Medley has interest from a number of Division-I schools and Kasi Korza is getting heavy interest from a number of Division-II schools. The Senators took 3rd place in Class 3A last year, and are ranked (#2) in both the IHSSN Coaches and AP preseason polls.

United Township is a much improved team over the last couple years, and I thought that, at least early, this could be a good game. It got out of hand quickly. Springfield jumped out to a 12-4 first quarter lead, and smothered the Panthers throughout the 2nd quarter to lead 30-12 at halftime, on their way to a 62-25 running-clock win.

I was a few seconds late to start the second half. At the end of the first half I stopped and talked with coach Massey, as I had just found his blog. http://masseybasketball.blogspot.com/ I then made a beeline to get a quick lunch from the hospitality room (sub sandwiches and a Pepsi), and arrived at the start of the 3rd quarter. Woops!

Medley chucked up some three-pointers and finished with 21 points, while Ashton Williams (5'10" So.) added 12 points. United Township was led by Autumn Vergeyle with 8 points.

Springfield has 11 players on their roster, and all 11 saw significant action throughout this route. The Senators were (14-16) from the free throw line.

Afterwards, I headed back to Monmouth to upload some video taken over the last few days, along with catching up on these blog entries. Games 17 and 18 on the way tonight from Thiel Gymnasium, then two days of rest after a globetrotting week!
