Game 96
Galesburg vs. Warren (Boy's Basketball)
Galesburg Martin Luther King Tournament
(1/15/11)
When Galesburg beat Teutopolis for the Charleston Holiday Tournament championship, the Silver Streaks slowed the game down against a much bigger team. This game plan would also be employed against the Warren Blue Devils.

The Silver Streaks controlled the tip, and held onto the basketball for the first 1:00. Galesburg held onto the ball and limited posessions for Warren, but the Blue Devils took a 14-9 lead after one quarter. The shots were falling for Galesburg, who trailed 27-23 at halftime.
In the first half, Galesburg did not make a shot inside the three-point line, nor did they make many attempts from inside the arc. The Silver Streaks boy's were knocking down three's like the GHS girl's team, hitting seven three-pointers in the 1st half.
Galesburg outscored Warren 15-14 in the 3rd quarter, and were still in the game early in the 4th quarter. The Streaks controlled the tempo of the game throughout, limited turnovers, and took good shots. It was a 41-38 Warren lead after three quarters.
In the 4th quarter, Galesburg built some momentum and led by as many as 5 points late in the game. However, Warren was able to sneak back in the final minute. The Streaks missed a couple free throws, and with five seconds to play, Warren had the basketball and went the length of the court, down 54-53. Before a shot was attempted, Galesburg fouled JoVaughn Gaines. It was on the floor, and it was only the 6th team foul for the Streaks. Only 0:0.7 remained, and a shot off the in-bound at the buzzer was no good, securing one of the biggest upsets in the state this year. Galesburg knocked off Class 4A's #4 ranked team.
Coach Mike Reynolds was noticeably excited with the victory in our postgame show on WAIK. In fact, a quite humorous moment after he stated how light the crowd was, meaning not many Galesburg fans were in attendance in a game of this magnitude. He went on, "BUT....you can buy a DVD of this game for $10!" Each game at the Galesburg Martin Luther King Tournament is for sale for just $10.
We also had Dalton Davis join us on the postgame show, our First Glass "Breakout Player of the Game." Dalton finished with a team-high 17 points, and went 7-10 at the free throw line. He was 5-8 at the line in the 4th quarter.
Nathan Boothe scored a game-high 23 points for the Warren Blue Devils.
After our postgame show, I made the quick switch, setting down the radio headsets and picking up the IHSSN headsets, and picking up the final game of the night....read about in Blog 97.
