Game 13: Galesburg vs. East Peoria (Girl's)

Game 13
Galesburg vs. East Peoria (Girl's)
Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament
(11/19/10)

During the Illini West/LeRoy game, I sought out Evan Massey...after a trip to the hospitality room. We conducted our pregame interview and talked about the tournament. There are 11 teams in the tournament, and I wondered how that number came to be?

Massey said that while waiting on contracts to be returned, he had some feelers still out there, and decided to let anyone in that returned the contract, so there were in additional three teams added. Knoxville was one of the teams added, and they will be serving as a host during some of the games. Rich East only wanted to come down for two days, so they will be the one team that gets just four games instead of five (due to an odd amount of teams).

I spoke with WCAZ's Keith Yex, and he was talking about "Mt. Carmel-Gate," a term I just coined. I reference that due to the fact that the overnight accomodations of the Golden Aces football team has been kept as big a secret as Area 51. Some reports have them staying in Quincy Friday night, practicing on an area field, while another report had them staying in Macomb. Mt. Carmel will face Illini West in the Class 3A semi-finals. I have been to Mt. Carmel. I bought a few hundred old issues of the Sporting News from Ebay. I only payed $20 for around 500 of them (dating back to the early 70's), but of course spent about $75 on gas on the 11-hour round trip. When the Ebay seller said he lived in a cabin in the woods, I was a little hesitant, but he turned out to be a normal guy who had all of his teeth and didn't make me squeal like a pig (Deliverance reference for you young ones).

East Peoria arrived a little later than the other teams before their game against the Silver Streaks. They showed up midway through the 3rd quarter of the Illini West/LeRoy game. I ran down to get my pregame interview with Pete McGinness. His roster of 12 is down to 9 due to injuries.

The Galesburg game film will have our 1590 WAIK broadcast on them, and I helped the young lady filming get the digital radio plugged into the camcorder before the game. They had to switch out cameras, because the original camcorder did not have a port to plug the radio into.

After a near-record setting three-point barrage by the Streaks on Tuesday (6-61), I was expecting a much better shooting percentage night. With this group, they will not be shooting 10% too often this season. Tonight, they would finish (12-58). Still not the greatest, and one three-pointer shy of a triple cheeseburger from McDonalds for those Streaks fans in attendance wearing their T-shirts.

During the first two games, Galesburg has chucked up 119 three-point attempts. Their 61 and 58 attempts rank 2nd and 7th all-time in the IHSA record books.

Myra Diggins sat out for Galesburg with an injury. Megan Young played more post in Diggins' absence and came up with 10 offensive rebounds. Sadee Hamilton also had another great night, and was named the WAIK First Glass Breakout Player of the Game.

The Silver Streaks pulled out the 67-58 win over East Peoria, picking up their first win of the year (1-1).

Jessica Howard scored 19 points, and has 989 career points.

Mickey Rodriguez made five three-pointers and finished with 15 points, while Jamie Johnson added 11 points.

Kelsey Shoemake scored a game-high 22 points for East Peoria, most, if not all, in the paint. Carrie Myers added 14 points for the Lady Raiders.
