Game 12
Knoxville vs. United Township (Girl's)
Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament
(11/19/10)
The Knoxville Blue Bullets are a team I was eager to catch this week. I ranked them in my Class 1A top ten heading into the 2010-11 season. Apparently, nobody was listening. Knoxville didn't receive a single vote in the Associated Press pre-season rankings, and just a sniff in the coaches poll. Mark my word: Knoxville will be ranked in the top ten when the next polls come out the first week of January.
Haley Kelso (5'4" Fr. Guard) had a breakout game in a double-digit win over Metamora earlier in the week. She knocked down four three-pointers and had 16 points in her first ever high school game...against a Class 3A team to boot.
This is a true matchup of the David vs. Goliath. Knoxville is a Class 1A school with 335 enrollment, while United Township is a Class 4A school with over 1,700 students.
The Panthers jumped out to a 12-8 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, it was an 8-point game, with UTHS leading 28-20. Kiana Brady led the Panthers with 8 first half points.
Haley, Haley, Hailey! Knoxville has three of them on their roster. The afforementioned Kelso, Haley Jones (6'0" Jr.) and Hailey Lehman (5'8" Sr.). The Haley's would finish with a combined 16 points in Knoxville's 52-42 loss. Brady finished with a game-high 13 points, while teammate Laura Burrill scored 12 points.
Van What? United Township had three players that had last names beginning with "Van." Jen VanWatermeulen, Jamie VanWatermeulem, and Abby VanDeventer. Panthers Forward Aisha Burris' first name is pronounced, Asia.
