Game 16
(11/28/09)
Peoria Woodruff vs. Chicago Harlan
Galesburg Tournament
After the Manual broadcast, had a few minutes to chat with Carl Sandburg College men's basketball coach Ryan Twaddle. Coach Twaddle has been in attendance looking at various players from the tournament's field.
Woodruff entered this game with a (3-1) record, but had struggled in the games I saw. Deontray Dorsey and Tylander Amos have had to carry the load for coach Charlie Thomas. Meanwhile, Chicago Harlan had also surprised me by not playing to the expecations, despite their (3-1) record heading into the matchup.
This will be the final year of Woodruff in the tournament, and as a school. It will be interesting on where their underclassmen end up at Peoria schools. Manual and Central seem to be the frontrunners for a majority of the Woodruff students.
The Warriors started out on a big first quarter run, fueled by Amos and Dorsey. The two combined for all 17 points. At halftime, Harlan powered ahead, 28-26. Dorsey and Amos had 26 of the 28 Warriors points. Harlan was paced by Romane Hunters's 14 points.
It was back and forth in the third quarter, with Woodruff leading by four, 45-41 heading into the fourth quarter. Deontray Dorsey lit up the second half, finishing three quarters with 27 points. Dorsey nailed seven shots, including a three-pointer just after halftime.
It was all Woodruff in the fourth quarter, most notably Dorsey. This time, Dorsey did it from the charity stripe. He went (8-9) from the line in the fourth quarter, and Woodruff went on for the 68-57 lead. Dorsey finished with 37 points, and teammate Tylander Amos scored 19 points. The Harlan Falcons got 20 points from Romane Hunter and 19 points from Dondricas Kellum.
The Warriors finished (4-1) in the Galesburg Tournament, and Chicago Harlan went (3-2). Dondricas Kellum of Harlan was named to the All-Tournament team, and both Deontray Dorsey and Tylander Amos were named to the All-Tournament team for Woodruff.
Following this game, just enough time to hit the hospitality room for some sloppy joes, and tear down the IHSSN equipment and put up the radio equipment for the two Galesburg games.
