Game 15
(11/28/09)
Peoria Manual vs. Chicago Collins Academy
Galesburg Tournament
After watching 11 hours of basketball on Friday (6 complete games and parts of 3 others), I was ready for another whole day of hoops. To prepare for a long day of broadcasting (4 games), I made sure I had enough lemon drops to keep those salivary glands active through the day.
I stopped by the studios in Monmouth on my way to Galesburg to grab the Saturday sports page along with the FlipVideo camera to take video of the day's action, including the Hall of Fame ceremony at GHS later in the night.
As I pulled up to Galesburg High School shortly after noon, it was void of any cars. Much to my chagrin, there was a break following the 10:30 game, up until my first broadcast at 1:45. I drove downtown to the WAIK studios in Galesburg and filled out some scorebooks before heading back to the school shortly before 1:00.
A light crowd, as expected was on hand for the first game of the afternoon session. When I got to the gym, it was nearly an hour before tipoff, and Manual was on the floor practicing their buzzer beaters (i.e. half courters and trick shots, not the normal warmup routine that would come later).
Prior to the game, spoke with Robert Hahn of WMBD in Peoria. He had a busy day, catching some film on Manual, before heading to the Fulton County Tournament, and the Brimfield girl's tournament. Also spoke with one of the middle school coaches from Moline, who was there scouting for a future matchup against Manual.
Surprisingly, Collins Academy stayed close with Manual through the first half, trailing 24-19 after the first quater, but the Rams had extended that lead to 39-26 by halftime. Lawrence Alexander had a big first half for Manual, with three slam dunks in the first two quarters, all of his field goals. He led Manual with 10 points, while Andre Stoutmire scored 13 points by halftime.
Manual pulled ahead in the second half, as expected. The stifling Manual defense limited Collins to just eight field goals in the second half, while the Rams poured in 36 points in the second half.
Alexander scored a game-high 20 points for Manual, while Brandon Watson added 15 points, Jeff Stokes pitched in 13 points, and Marvin Jordan added 11 points. The Warriors of Chicago Collins got a team-high 13 points from Stoutmire, all in the first half.
Andrew and Marvin Jordan earned All-Tournament honors at the Galesburg Tournament, who finished (5-0) and won the tournament title outright. Video of the Rams receiving the tournament trophy can be found online at www.ihssn.net.
