Game 99: Sterling vs. Warren (Boy's Basketball)

Game 99
Sterling vs. (Gurnee) Warren (Boy's Basketball)
Galesburg Martin Luther King Tournament
(1/17/11)

In all honesty, I didn't know what type of game the Sterling Golden Warriors/Warren Blue Devils matchup would be.  Sterling didn't play very well on Saturday, and I am sure the Blue Devils were fired up after their loss to Galesburg on Saturday night.

The Golden Warriors came out pumped and took it right at the Class 4A ranked Blue Devils.  Behind the hot perimiter shooting, Sterling jumped out to a 13-10 lead after the 1st quarter.  Drew Pace knocked down a pair of three-pointers, and finished the game with five altogether and scored 23 points.

It was more of the same for Sterling in the 2nd quarter, leading by as many as 7 points before halftime.  The underdogs led by two points at halftime, 23-21.  Warren jumped out of the gates in the 2nd half behind an outstanding performance by Darius Paul (6'6" Jr.), who scored 14 points in the 3rd quarter alone, on his way to a game-high 26 points.  Warren took a 43-35 lead at the end of three quarters and cruised to a 61-53 victory, but a valiant effort for the Golden Warriors.  To listen to the archived broadcast, click HERE.

Afterwards, I hurriedly packed up the broadcast equipment to take over to Knox College, to broadcast the Mid-Winter Classic game between the Galesburg girl's and the Morton Lady Potters.

Sleet was falling from the sky, making the sidewalks and parking lot a little icy.  Fortunately, no spills took place!  A black SUV pulled up as I walked to the parking lot.  A woman asked if the sophomores were playing here.  I assumed she meant the girl's, since there were no sophomore games for the boy's tournament.  She was searching out the Morton sophomore girl's game, which was being played at the auxiliary gym at Knox College.  I said that it was at Knox, and she didn't know how to get there.  I said, follow me, that's where I'm headed.
