Game 90: Quincy @ Galesburg (Girl's Basketball)

My McWeakness
Game 90
Quincy @ Galesburg (Girl's Basketball)
(1/13/11)

I'm weak.  I didn't want it to happen, but it happened anyway.  Cheeseburgers.  I can't stop myself sometimes.  The giant bright golden arches, they're magnetic.  During basketball season, I'm road weary and weak.  I can't resist the delicious double cheeseburgers.  I gave in!

I arrived at John Thiel Gymnasium in plenty of time, actually pretty early, even for my standards tonight.  It was around 4:30 when I pulled into my parking spot.

The Streaks were hosting Quincy in a Western Big 6 matchup.  In their previous meeting, Galesburg won handily, 81-36 at Quincy.  Evan Massey and I conducted our pregame interview, talking about tonight's game and about how much fun this team has together.  He puts pictures of the girls up on his blog of their team dinners.  Evan Massey's Blog

After our chat, I spoke with Quincy head coach Greg Altmix, who was filming the sophomore game.  I asked if he was short handed, since he was doing the film work.  He mentioned he had just one manager and she keeps the scorebook.  The sophomore were also short on players, only dressing 7 girls against Galesburg.  Altmix said that two starters were missing tonight, one to illness and one to injury.

Galesburg's sophomores cruised to a 81-22 win improving to 6-6 on the season.  It was a sign of things to come in the varsity game.

The crowd at GHS was pretty impressive for a Quincy game.  A lot of Galesburg fans came out to support the Silver Streaks.  It's nice to see.

Galesburg took a 16-8 lead at the end of one quarter, and led 42-19 at halftime.  The Streaks had made 10-29 three-pointers in the first half.  Hot shooting highlighted the 3rd quarter, with Galesburg knocking down 7 more three-pointers in a 31-point quarter, taking a 73-27 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

In the 4th quarter, Megan Young hit her second three-pointer of the night, and sophomore Sharron Diggins knocked down three-pointer #20.  Despite Megan Young only attempting 27 of the team's 854 three-pointers coming into this game, coach Massey said she is one of the most accurate shooters on "The Gun," in practice.

Speaking of those that don't take three-pointers, the record-tying three came from an unlikely source, Myra Diggins.  She entered the game, shooting 0-6 from the three-point line.  Diggins knocked the 21st three-pointer from the top of the arc in the last two minutes of the 4th quarter.  Galesburg had a couple chances in the final 90 seconds to break the record, but one three-pointer was blocked, and a Paige Klinck attempt just rimmed out.  The Silver Streaks prevailed with a 90-45 win.  I can honestly say that I've never seen a crowd so excited over a posession in the final 20 seconds of a 45-point game!

Galesburg is Three-Diculous
3-pointers made:  242
3-point attempts:  913
Total FG's made:  487
Total FG attempts: 1,362

The 1980's had the two Corey's, and the 2010-11 Galesburg Silver Streaks have the two Jessica's.  Howard knocked down eight three-pointers and scored 24 points, while Lieber hit five three-pointers and matched that scoring output.

Coupled with United Township's win over Rock Island, Galesburg takes sole possession of the Western Big 6 lead (5-1).  Galesburg is 17-3 overall.
