Game 62: Sterling vs. Moline (Girl's Basketball)

Game 62
Sterling vs. Moline (Girl's Basketball)
Sterling Shootout
12/22/10

My friend, Dale Dykeman, is an assistant volleyball coach at Sterling High School. He came up during the Sterling/Moline game, and made arrangements to meet up after the game. Cody Cutter, from Northern Illinois Sports Beat, sat down to cover the Golden Warriors in their game against the Maroons.

Cody and I talked throughout the game about basketball, website numbers, and the best destination for New Year's. He was looking for a place to go for New Year's Eve, and I suggested Chicago. In some article I read recently, Chicago was voted as best city in the U.S. to celebrate New Year's 2011.

Sterling pounced on Moline early, taking a 19-9 lead after the first quarter. The Maroons began to make some runs, most notably in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but turnovers doomed their comeback effort.

Moline coughed up the ball 21 times, but many of them came at the most inopportune times. The Moline defense held Sterling to just 6 points in the 2nd quarter, including holding them scoreless through the first four minutes of that frame. However, Moline only scored 6 points themselves.

Neither team played their top game, as Sterling also committed 21 turnovers in their 40-36 win. The Golden Warriors shot 50% (9-18) from the free throw line. The Maroons were (9-19) from the free throw line, but just 5-10 in the 4th quarter from the charity stripe.

Lauren Hernandez (15) and Aleena Hammelman (14) led Sterling in scoring. Kylie Romeo paced the Maroons with 17 points.
