Game 8: Galesburg vs. Metamora

Game 8
Galesburg vs. Metamora
(11/20/09)
Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament

The Streaks take the floor for their second game of the week, displaying their new Grinnell-style offense. Getting the fans involved with the game even more, is a promotion teaming up with McDonalds. "3Diculous" T-shirts are on sale for $10, and when the Streaks knock down 13 three-pointers, fans in attendance wearing those shirts get a free triple-cheeseburger.

Metamora struggled to an (0-2) start heading into this Friday night affair. The game followed United Township/Illini West, in which UTHS piled up 85 points on the Chargers. Alleman handled East Peoria in the second matchup of the night.

Galesburg jumped out to a (21-16) first quarter lead, behind nine points from Jessica Howard. The lead stayed at five points through the first half, giving GHS a (38-33) halftime lead. The Streaks handled the ball much better throughout the game, only turning the ball over 20 times, compared to 40+ on Tuesday in the opener. Much less fouls in this game as well.

The Streaks poured on 32 points after the break, in the third quarter behind hot shooting from outside the three-point arc. After three quarters, the Streaks needed just two three-pointers to give fans a triple-cheeseburger. Mickey Rodriguez torched the nets for three three's in the third, while Maddy Boyer, Tai Peachey, Jessica Howard, and Megan Young also knocked in three's. The most exciting of the three's, was the Peachey tray. With just 0:02 remaining in the quarter, Metamora in-bounded, which was turned over at halfcourt. A quick outlet pass to Peachey at the top of the key gave her just enough time to turn around and knock it in at the buzzer.

Galesburg continued their outside magic with four more three-pointers, ensuring fans a McDonalds triple cheeseburger after the game. Four Streaks hit double-digits, led by Jessica Howard's 15 points and Mickey Rodriguez with 14 points. Metamora was paced by Kelsey Nafziger's 16 points, while Ally Friday knocked in 12. Both Redbird standouts, Whitney Rohrbach and Justine Phillips were held in-check, scoring a combined 15 points.
