Game 125
B-PC/A vs. Knoxville (Girl's Basketball)
Class 1A Regional (@ United)
(2/9/11)
Prior to heading out to United High School, I made a stop at the Subway drive-thru for the dinner-lunch. Throughout the day, I got by on a couple apples and crackers. I ordered a 6-inch tuna on wheat with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, and pickles.
It was about 5:00 when I arrived at the school, shortly after the B-PC/A bus. The Knoxville bus pulled in shortly after I pulled in. It took me a few minutes to get things set up, and filled out the score book while keeping an eye on the three-point shootout.
One of my two broadcast partners for the night cap arrived, Chris Van Norman. He is the father of Red Storm player, Sadie Van Norman. He asked if I was broadcasting the first game, and offered to provide color commentary for the broadcast. My other partner, Bryon Robbins showed up a few minutes later.
The Lady Spartans and Blue Bullets split their two regular season meetings, winning on each other's home court. Knoxville won their road game by 8 points, and B-PC/A avenged that loss at Knoxville by 24 points. Both teams have been extremely streaky all season long.
Knoxville took a 12-8 lead after the 1st quarter, and held a 29-24 halftime lead. Turnovers plagued the Lady Spartans, as they had 13 in the first half, compared to just six by Knoxville. The Blue Bullets took control in the 3rd quarter, outscoring B-PC/A 22-10 in that span of eight minutes. Abby Ball scored 7 points in the 3rd quarter and finished with 19 points, sharing game-high honors with Katie Houston.
The Blue Bullets continued their run in the 4th quarter, outscoring B-PC/A 16-10 and won the game 68-44, advancing to Friday night's Regional championship. B-PC/A committed 21 turnovers, while Knoxville finished with just 13. Houston and Ball scored 19 points each, while Makenzie Frank added 10 points. Bridjet Blout led the Lady Spartans with 11 points, and Sarah Reihm added 10 points.
Before the game, Frank advanced in the three-point shootout. She made all five balls in the first rack from the right wing, and finished with 9 three-pointers. She joins Bridjet Blout, Sarah Reihm, and Ali Postle (West Central) to advance to Friday's competition.
The teams combined to commit 30 fouls in the 2nd half. There were 43 total fouls committed in the game.
Three Knoxville freshman saw significant playing time, with Haley Kelso in the starting lineup. Kelly Lenz and Paige Putnam also saw minutes.
