Game 90
(2/13/10)
Macomb vs. Metro-East Lutheran (Boy's Basketball)
Riverton Shootout
There was minimal time to get things situated before the Macomb/MEL game. Fortunately, I have seen Macomb several times, and I am very familiar with their team. It would have been a real struggle had I not seen either team.
The scorebook got filled out during timeouts of the previous game, but just a few minutes seperated my postgame show on WMOI and my starting lineups and opening tipoff of this game.
It looked to be like a barn burner from the outset, with Macomb leading Metro-East 20-17 after the first quarter. Matt Gordy did a bulk of that scoring, pouring in half of the 20 points, including a pair of three-pointers that sparked the Macomb offense. Metro-East was led by both Matt Hackman and Bob Schneitz in the opening frame. Schneitz surpassed 1,000 career points earlier in the season.
Metro-East outscored Macomb 11-7 in the second quarter to take a 28-27 lead at the break. Gordy was held scoreless in the second quarter, but led all Bombers with 10 points. Seth Wickert scored five points in the second quarter, and had 8 points at halftime. MEL was led by Matt Hackman's 12 points, and Bob Schneitz's 10 points at the break.
The Bombers jumped out in the second half, winning the quarter 15-7, and took a 42-35 lead into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Gordy hit a couple big three-pointers, but Metro-East fought valiantly throughout the final quarter. With 0:01.2 to play in the game, Macomb held a 51-50 lead. MEL inbounded to Schneitz on the left side wing, where he drained a buzzer beating three-pointer to win the game for Metro-East Lutheran, giving them a 53-51 win.
Schneitz finished with a game-high 21 points and was named the game's MVP. Matt Hackman and Dan Neimeier each finished with 14 points. Matt Gordy led Macomb with 19 points, and Tyler Thorman and Robert McKee each pitched in 10 points.
Following the game, I wrapped up a short postgame show, and the growling stomach took over. 20:00 was put on the clock before the next game tipped off, so I made a beeline to the hospitality room. The Riverton Shootout hospitality room is always one of the top rooms during the basketball season. I ate light today, grabbing just a couple sub sandwiches from Subway, along with a sugar cookie and chocolate chip cookie, and a water. I read the Springfield State Journal-Register sports page, and headed back up for the next game, Riverton vs. St. Joseph-Ogden.
