Game 85
(2/8/10)
Biggsville West Central vs. B-PC/A (Girl's Basketball)
Class 1A Regionals (@ Biggsville West Central)
It was a long, long period to fill between the postgame show, the three-point showdown, and the pregame show for our nightcap of the doubleheader. After our postgame interview with Dennis Mann, I wrapped up the game stats, and finished broadcasting the three-point showdown.
Speaking of the three-point showdown, something I missed in the previous blog, was the status of the competition between United and West Prairie. Two of the four shooters for West Prairie were sick and not at the game. Coach Mize told me that the other two girls did not want to shoot, therefore the Cyclones had zero shooters in the competition. United still took their shots, but all four advanced no matter what.
There was a shootout between Mariah Brooks (West Central) and Sarah Reihm (B-PC/A). The shootout would be prolonged further after both girls made three shots. Brooks would advance making two shots in the second shootout, while Reihm made one.
Following the shootout, West Central boy's coach Charlie Carver came up to talk. We spoke about his boy's program, who have won five games this year, after winning only one game a year ago. Carver is in his first year at the school, coming from eastern Illinois. We also talked about the upcoming girl's matchup.
Kendra Pierce scored the first six points for the Spartans. Bridjet Blout added a basket for B-PC/A, who trailed the hosts 10-8 after a quarter. The Heat lit up from outside, with Mariah Brooks and Ashli Burg hitting three-pointers in the opening quarter.
West Central matched their first quarter output in the second quarter, scoring 10 points, while the Spartans did the same (8 points). An ugly foul took place in the second quarter, with Kendra Pierce taking a steal for a layup. She was pushed from behind by West Central's Stephanie Ackermann. She was called for a flagrant foul. The second quarter finished pretty rough between the teams with physical play after that point.
The Lady Spartans opened up the second half on a 12-1 run, sparked by a three-pointer by Carley Foster and Sarah Reihm, and baskets from Bridjet Blout and Abby Stier. With B-PC/A up 28-21, the Heat rallied back, rolling off a 9-2 run, to tie the game at 30-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
B-PC/A started to pull away in the fourth quarter, aided by the stifling in-your-face defense by Kendra Pierce, who finished with about 8 steals. Pierce scored 12 points in the fourth quarter alone, including a pair of three-pointers, and finished with a game-high 23 points.
Bridjet Blout scored six points in the final frame, and ended the night with 12 points. West Central mustered up three field goals by Ashli Burg, who scored a team-high 16 points for the Heat. Samantha Arnold added a three-pointer for West Central, who really struggled from the free throw line. The Heat went (2-7) from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, including missing three one-and-bonus shots. The Heat finished with 20 turnovers, while the Spartans turned it over 15 times.
The postgame show was a quick wrap up of the game, and an update on the winter storm warning in effect over the next day and a half. I was eagerly awaiting the snow upon leaving, or not. An expected six to nine inches of snowfall is expected.
The roads were pretty tricky with the snow flying, but not quite as bad as I had anticipated. Normally, the drive from Biggsville to Macomb is around 40 minutes, but tonight it took about an hour. The slowest part was the trip down Route 34 from Biggsville to Monmouth. Route 67 was fairly clear, and I drove about 50-60 the entire trip back.
