Game 52
(1/9/10)
Quincy Notre Dame vs. Brown County (Girl's Basketball)
Lady Panther Classic (@ Camp Pt. Central)
A mere nine hours after getting off the road from a broadcast, it was a quick turn around to head south to Camp Point Central High School. I left Macomb at 7:00 a.m. with my daily stop to Ayerco for coffee and a bite for breakfast. I am very fond of the nutrition-less Little Debbie Apple Pies.
On the road, a watched the sunrise to the east while traveling south on Route 61 near Colmar (99% sure that will be the only Colmar reference in my blog). On the radio, popped Snow's "Informer", one of my favorites growing up. Nobody ever did find out the lyrics to that song.
I was able to outsmart my Garmin, taking a shortcut through Golden. For some reason, the GPS told me to take a different (longer route). My shortcut shaved five minutes off of the drive time. I learned of this route through a college roommate who had student taught at the school.
Arriving in the parking lot at the school, the lot was nearly barren, except for the Quincy Notre Dame bus. They won the prize for first team to arrive, of the four that were scheduled to play the 9:00 a.m. game. I spoke with both head coaches briefly, and QND coach Eric Orne made a note in my scorebook. I had three Gengenbacher's listed. All-State senior Karlee, along with younger sister (sophomore) Kassidy. I also had Kate Gengenbacher in my book, but it is actually Genenbacher, no "g". I found that intriguing.
As I went back to the broadcast booth, a panicked feeling set over, recalling I may have turned my headlights on. I did not want to go through another dead battery incident, like the one discussed in broadcast blog #51. I quickly grabbed my coat, ran to the car, and checked. Sure enough, second day in a row I left my lights on. This would have been a disaster had I drained my battery. Turning the key in the ignition, she fired right up. Phew!
On the air, I didn't expect this first matchup to be closely contested, with the Class 2A (#10) Quincy Notre Dame Raiders taking on Brown County. Personally, I think QND being ranked 10th is way too low in Class 2A.
The Raiders showed they are for real giving Brown County fits. In fact, the Hornets only attempted four field goals the entire first quarter, trailing 19-4 after eight minutes. QND extended that lead in the second quarter and led (42-18) at halftime.
A stifling QND defense held the Hornets to just a three-point field goal in the third quarter, outscoring the Hornets 25-3 in that frame. It was a slow fourth quarter, as the Raiders just iced the clock and held on for the lopsided (78-26) win.
Quincy Notre Dame freshman Jordan Frericks scored a game-high 19 points, while returning all-stater Karlee Gengenbacher scored 15 points. QND forced 48 Brown County turnovers. The Hornets were led by Aimee Kerley's 12 points.
