Game 130: Herscher vs. St. Joseph-Ogden (Boy's Basketball)

St. Joseph-Ogden Takes the Floor
Game 130
Herscher vs. St. Joseph-Ogden (Boy's Basketball)
Riverton Shootout
(2/12/11)

I was able to catch up with a fellow member of the Illinois High School Sports.com family, KJRYNO.  He has sons that play for Windsor, and the Blue Devils are playing tonight at the Illini Central Coaches vs. Cancer Shootout.  He made the trip to Riverton to catch the first few games, before heading to Mason City.

He told me that Roger Lowe wasn't invited back to broadcast on the IHSA telecasts of the basketball state finals.  Roger did a fantastic job on the broadcasts and will be missed.  Lowe was a head coach at Windsor in the 1980's, and also had a stint at Princeton.  Dave Bernhard and Lee Hall will be the broadcasters on the state finals, and both of them do a fantastic job, also.

After Eastland won in dramatic fashion in overtime over Springfield Calvary, I noticed their warm-up shirts.  The backs of them read, "Most Valuable Player."

Officials for the Herscher/St. Joseph-Ogden game are Jerry Held, Mike Hawley, and Joe Jackson.

The Herscher Tigers feature twin brothers, Justin and Jordan Ruckman (6'5" Juniors).  They combined to score 19 of Herscher's 46 points.

The Spartans of St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans trailed by two points after one quarter, but held a three point lead (24-21) at halftime.  Herscher took advantage of a 13-7 third quarter to reclaim the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 34-31.

St. Joe-Ogden outscored Herscher 19-12 in the final eight minutes to win, 50-46.  The Tigers went 5-9 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter, while the Spartans went 7-12.  The Spartans committed 12 turnovers, the Tigers 11.

Both teams had very balanced scoring...

St. Joseph-Ogden Scoring

Chase Patton - 9 points
Louis Acklin - 9 points
Will Firkins - 8 points
Drew Arteaga - 6 points

Herscher Scoring
Spike Engelman - 11 points
Ben Wenzelman - 10 points
Justin Ruckman - 10 points
Jordan Ruckman - 9 points

Illini Connection
St. Joseph-Ogden's Nate Michael (5'7" Fr.) is the son of former Illini basketball player Tom Michael.  Nate scored 5 points, including a clutch three-pointer in the 2nd quarter.  He looks so young he could pass for a 7th grader, but he has varsity game!

Youth
St. Joseph-Ogden improves to 18-7 on the season, and have a youthful lineup.  The Spartans start one senior (Jared Orcutt), one junior (Blake Hoveln), two sophomores (Chase Patton & Louis Acklin), and a freshman (Nate Michael).  Herscher started four juniors and a senior.

After this game, I made a quick trip down to the hospitality room.  With just 10 minutes to burn, I wasn't able to join in any conversations.  I chowed down on a couple Subway sandwiches.  I didn't even dress them up, outside a couple slices of cucumber.  I also grabbed a few cheese wedges, monterrey cheddar.
