Game 76
Galesburg vs. Teutopolis (Girl's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament Championship
(12/29/10)
The schedule of the holiday tournament had the girl's championship game tipping off at 7:00, with the boy's tipping off at 8:15. That's not wishful thinking, that's just downright impossible.
Next year, hopefully the schedule makers in Charleston realize that there is absolutely no way you can schedule a game 1 hour and 15 minutes apart. Not to mention, after the championship game, there is a trophy presentation AND an All-Tournament team announced. It's unreal to think there is 90 minutes between games. How often do varsity games tip off at 7:30 after a 6:00 fresh/soph game? Rarely! The morning session ran 50 minutes late in the end, with the final game tipping off at 1:05. It was a scheduled 12:15 start. I was anticipating a 9:30 tipoff for the boy's championship game, which was schedule to tip at 8:15. If anyone in Charleston reads this....please take a better look at the schedule times next year for the girl's tournament!
This was going to be my first look at the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis. I was able to get my pregame interview with coach Evan Massey earlier in the evening. When I asked what they did during the long day, he mentioned they went to a movie, but he couldn't remember what movie they saw, "it was a chick flick."
Teutopolis head coach Laurie Thompson was no where to be found. The team was sitting behind us, but no coach. WGIL's Jim Wyman went to track her down. Jimmie Carr and I set up our itinerary for interviews on the night. While Wyman tried to catch Thompson at halftime of the 3rd place game (prior to our game), I went to grab Mike Reynolds for the boy's pregame interview, that would air at halftime of the girls game. This was being done because there would not be enough time to squeeze in two interviews in the pregame show, since it was combined with our girl's postgame show. After I talked with Reynolds, Wyman still couldn't find Laurie Thompson, and didn't get her interview until the end of the 3rd quarter. With little time to work with, we scrapped trying to track her down, and Jimmie went to interview T-Town boy's head coach Andy Fehrenbacher. His interview would run during the pregame show, and the postgame interview with coach Evan Massey would run live during halftime of the boy's game.
In a previous Charleston blog entry, I talked about the various pronunciations of Teutopolis. I've called it Too-Top-Uh-Lis all along. A couple of very friendly T-Town fans were sitting behind us, and we talked throughout the night. After the girl's game, the P.A. announcer at Lantz called it Tee-Uh-Top-Uh-Lis. I turned around and asked the gentlemen, and they confirmed that was the correct pronunciation. I'm sensing a Lewis-Town and Lewis-Ton similarity here!

This was a lot of tricky names, but there will never, ever be a trickier list of names than when Lombard College Prep played in the B-PC Spartan Tip-Off Classic a few years ago. I don't have the scorebook from that game in my office right now, but hopefully I can track it down with a list of those names.
Teutopolis has a rich tradition of basketball, both boy's and girl's. That trend looks to continue for the girls, as their 8th graders last year won an IESA 8-3A state championship. One player, Madeline Hartke (5'8" Fr.) is on the varsity roster. She scored 8 points in that state title victory over Green Valley Midwest Central (19-17).
Galesburg appeared to have stunned the Wooden Shoes to start the game, with their fast play and three-point shooting. The Silver Streaks knocked down four three-pointers in the first quarter, but trailed after one quarter (18-17). Teutopolis was able to settle in and slow down the Streaks after the first couple minutes and battled well.
It was back and forth throughout the 2nd quarter, and Galesburg took a 39-38 lead into halftime. Galesburg outscored T-Town 19-14 in the 3rd quarter, and were able to pull away in the last eight minutes to win 79-66. The Streaks have won 10 straight games, and 13 of their last 14 games. Their losses are to Illini West (first game of season), Springfield (3A #2), and United Township.
Jessica Howard led the Silver Streaks with 23 points, and was named the Tournament MVP. Jessica Lieber scored 13 points, and Tai Peachey and Jamie Johnson pitched in 12 points each. Jessie Wendt scored a game-high 25 points for Teutopolis. Shelby Kroeger scored 12 points for the Wooden Shoes, who lost for just the 2nd time this season. Their only other loss was to Pana.

I never would have guessed the pronunciation of Teutopolis. For all my life, I was with you, Beau, and called it Too-Top-Uh-Lis. I think we are right, and the natives are wrong.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work on the blog.
P.S. If you don't see a urinal in the restroom, it's a good bet you're in the wrong one. :)
