Game 70: Galesburg vs. Mattoon (Boy's Basketball)

Game 70
Galesburg vs. Mattoon (Boy's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament
(12/28/10)

One of those quick transitions from postgame show to pregame show. In fact, just a :30 commercial was the only thing that broke up the two shows. In the end, all of the Galesburg boy's and girl's games will be played back-to-back. It certainly has its ups and downs. For the radio station, we can save on hours for our board operators back at the studio. However, for the broadcasters, and listeners, its tough because we don't have time to have an ample pregame show for the boys.

Mattoon was a team that I felt could bite the Silver Streaks if they had a down game, which was a possibility. Mattoon beat Rantoul in the opening day on a last second basket by Trey Milligan, giving the Green Wave a 65-63 win over the Class 2A preseason ranked Eagles.

After eight minutes of basketball, it was just 5-4. In the girls game, I think it took under two minutes for the Galesburg girls to score that amount of points. In fact, the guys of Galesburg would prevail 46-36. The two teams combined to score 6 points less (82) than the Galesburg girls (88).

The Silver Streaks pulled out a 19-10 lead at halftime, and led 27-19 after three quarters. Mattoon hit a field goal midway through the 2nd quarter...then didn't make another basket from the field until 3:50 to play in the game. The Green Wave scored just four points in the 3rd quarter, all at the free throw line.

Second Half By the Numbers
Total Fouls: 31
Free Throw Attempts: 45
Free Throws Made: 30
Players Fouling Out: 4

Galesburg had three players foul out in the 4th quarter, Ryan McElmurry, Brandon Thompson, and Trimaine Carson. It really hurt having the top two guards out of the game.

Garrett Williams scored a game-high 16 points for Galesburg. This was just his third game back, after serving a 10 game suspension. Brandon Thompson scored 14 points, and Dalton Davis added 10 points. Trey Milligan led Mattoon with 11 points.

With a long break before our next tipoff at Charleston High School, we made lunch plans with the WGIL radio crew, Jim Wyman and Brad Bennewitz. Jimmie Carr chose Cody's in Mattoon.

I had the Cody's Pretzel Burger, cooked medium rare. On the burger was pepperjack cheese, onion, bacon, and mushrooms. Typically, I don't eat bacon, but I gave in. You can say I wanted the full effect of the Pretzel Burger. It was cooked to perfection, with the meat a light red in the middle. I ordered cole slaw on the side. This is usually my side of choice, and I enjoy comparing cole slaw's at various restaurants. My favorite cole slaw resides at Chick's on the Square in Macomb.

Much of our converstation surrounded teaching and school talk. Bennewitz teaches at Galesburg High School, and Wyman has subbed in the past, and currently teaches at Monmouth College.
