Game 12: Galesburg @ Quincy (Girl's)

Game 12
(11/24/09)
Galesburg @ Quincy

The Western Big 6 girl's basketball season began at QHS for the Galesburg Silver Streaks. The Blue Devils play in the small auxilary gym at Quincy High, a broadcasters nightmare. Our broadcast table in the corner of the gym was shared with the other radio station in town just behind the Blue Devils bench.

Quincy's girl's hoops program has struggled in recent years, but the Blue Devils have some talent in (6'2") freshman Jordan Fletcher and quick and scrappy guard Shelby Wires. Tori Kuhn was lost to a transfer to Quincy Notre Dame (not the first transfer lost to QND).

The game started out back and forth between the teams. The Streaks trailed by two after one quarter. All Galesburg points in the first eight minutes came behind the arc. Jessica Howard drilled a pair of three's, with Baylie Boyer, Megan Young, and Mickey Rodriguez also adding tray's.

The halftime score was (34-32), with Galesburg getting just three field goals to go down, two more three's by Howard, and a basket by Shelby Pacheco. Quincy turned the ball over 17 times in the first half, just 10 for GHS. Fletcher the Frosh had 8 points at the halftime break, and would finish with 15.

Galesburg was whistled for the first eight fouls of the second half, to Quincy's 0 fouls. The Streaks were called on 18 fouls in the latter half, and had a total of 30 fouls against them. Neither team excelled at the free throw line, Galesburg (11/27) and Quincy (15/33).

I mentioned toward the end of the fourth quarter that free throws weren't going to win the game for either team, but they did. Trailing by two points, Galesburg missed four consecutive free throws. With less than 0:30 to play, the Streaks trailed (70-67) and had four offensive rebounds and attempted five three-pointers, missing all five shots. Quincy would get two free throws from Fletcher to ice the game, and claim the WB6 win (73-67).

The teams combined for 55 fouls and 60 free throws. The Blue Devils had 29 turnovers, Galesburg commited 18 turnovers. Jessica Howard scored a game-high 18 points and got double-digits from Shelby Pacheco (11) and Mickey Rodriguez (10). Quincy received 15 points apiece from Jordan Fletcher and Darion Stephens (15).
