Davis and the Maroons defeated Normal West on Friday night for his 299th career win. That milestone would have to wait, after the Peoria Central Lions would win, 61-50.

It's probably been mentioned in an earlier blog, but this will certainly be the last year for a "Quest." It is very much fun, however stressful at the same time. I learned very early on in last year's Quest for the Century Club, that in recapping the games (which I started doing the first few games), it was very boring. A big thanks to Al Hartwig for sending me his compilation of boy's basketball schedules, it will be very, very useful on planning weekend trips and weekday games that are out of my immediate area. He clued me in on this shootout at Springfield Prairie Capital Convention Center.
Kudos to the people who lined up the teams at this shootout. I know that Jason Speaks of Illinois Basketball Services had a big hand in the shootout. Several Division-One players would be showcased throughout the day.
These trips are my favorites, and probably for my readers, get more enjoyment out of the blogs because I have more time on the road to see things, think about things, and encounter strange occurrences. The setup of this blog is sort of an "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac meets "Beyond the Boxscore" by Matt Schuckman (Quincy Herald-Whig blog).
My plans were to head out of town at 9:00 a.m. and be in Springfield shortly before 11:00. This would give me time to find a parking spot, get setup, etc. before my first broadcast at noon.
Before I left town, I grabbed my typical morning coffee (a large today, due to the road trip), and stopped at K-Mart for my bulk pickup of Vitamin C and throat lozenges. I grabbed a pack of strawberry flavored Vitamin C drops, citrus Vitamin C drops, and strawberry swirl (or something like that) throat lozenges. In the store, I ran into Rich Egger from Tri-States Radio and we briefly discussed the Cubs offseason options. We were both in agreement over the choice of Mike Quade as the next Cubs skipper.
One thing I like about Saturday morning road trips are the coaches shows on radio stations. Driving Route 67 and Route 97 down to Springfield, I knew I could pickup something, whether it be out of Pittsfield (WBBA), Quincy (WGEM), or Jacksonville (WVIL). Sure enough, as I passed through Rushville I stopped on 97.5 WBBA, and listened to Jack Hull interview Carrollton Hawks basketball coach Jeff Krumweide. I first met "Coach K" last summer during the American Legion baseball division tournament in Moline. He is the head coach of the Eldred team. He led Eldred to the Division tournament, which was the first year for Legion baseball in Eldred/Carrollton in at least 50 years. Before the Eldred/Galesburg game, the coin flip (for home team purposes) was held in the grass behind the stands and concessions at Black Hawk College. The coin was thrown into the air...into the grass. It landed half heads, half tales. It was a unique coin flip!
When I was getting things in order before I left for home, I noticed my calendar in my office. December remains empty, because I haven't filled out my schedule yet (it's on the to-do list). I imagined what the calendar will look like after my broadcast schedule is finalized for the month. Glancing at the "December 2010," I thought...it's gonna be a long December. Of course, the Counting Crows instantly played in my mind, with their hit, "A Long December." After listening to WBBA's coaches show, I continuously hit the scan on my radio until finding something worth listening to. No offense to WBBA, their show following the coaches corner was an outdoors show, not my cup of tea. Guess what song came on? "A Long December." I had to listen, as it set the tone, not only for the entire month, but my long December day!
After gassing up in Pleasant Plains at Casey's, I flipped on AM 1450, who sponsored the shootout, they were getting set to go on with the first game of the day, Cairo vs. Springfield Calvary. They mentioned that Cairo had just arrived, after playing in DuQuoin on Friday night. Interestingly enough, the Pilots would play their game in Springfield, and then head back to DuQuoin and play AGAIN on Saturday night. By the way, former Lanphier standout and Fighting Illini Rich McBride is the new head coach at Cairo.
Little did I know, getting to the Prairie Capital Convention Center would be easier than expected! For some reason, I tend to get lost EVERY time I go to Springfield. Not only Springfield...every time I've gone to the Riverton Shootout, I've gotten lost either going to, or coming from, Riverton. EVEN with a Garmin!
Funniest Sign: A Springfield Casey's General Store had a sign out front touting: "Donuts and Beer Now Here." Forget Wheaties...Casey's introduces your new Breakfast of Champions!
I had an interesting conversation with the parking lot attendant...
(Pulling up to the attendant)
Attendant: "Parking is $5."
Me: "Is there a lot for media?"
Attendant: "No, this is the only parking lot, it's $5."
Me: "Okay." (handed him a $10 bill)
Attendant: "It's $5."
Me: (curiously looking at him after handing him a ten). "Can you tell me where the pass gate is?"
Attendant: "Oh, I don't know that, I just work for the parking lot."
Me: "Okay...how about the entrance?"
Attendant: "Oh...the entrance...yeah, it's right over there (pointing across the street). I didn't understand when you said pass gate, you must be from Chicago."
Me: "Well...from the north, thanks for the help."
I think we were both equally confused!
There was no pass gate (which is the gate where media/coaches/teams have quick access to sign in), just a general entrance. I found Jason Speaks, and I set up on press row.
Chatham Glenwood and Troy Triad lacked some offense in the early going of the noon game. It was just 6-5 after the first quarter. The Titans, playing in their own backyard, scored 13 points in the 2nd quarter, and led 18-14 at halftime. Tyler Thurston (6'4" Jr.) had 11 of Glenwood's 18 points. Glenwood would go on to defeat the Knights, 52-36.
Thurston finished with a game-high 16 points, and was named the game's MVP. Nick Sharp added 13 points, and Craig Fuchs scored 11 points. Triad was led by Jake Lewis with 13 points.
Name of the Game: I chose Miles McAdams (6'0" So.) from Glenwood over Triad's Tyler Noyes (6'3" Jr.).

Before I left the house Friday morning, I noticed something hanging on my living room wall. It was a motivational quote from Vince Lombardi. Why did I read it today, I don't know. It was one of those motivational quotes that was framed and given to me at the end of the year by my boss a few years ago. Some people hang pictures of family, trees or flowers, or dogs playing poker. I hang work stuff.

Driving home tonight, I contemplated the everlasting attempted sale of my house. Before the season started, I worried about how much stress it would put on me if I didn't get the house sold, and the many miles extra I would be driving. At this point, it's very annoying, but not as bad as I had expected. Of course, we're just three weeks into the basketball season. It's an 18-week season (altogether).
What I had going through my head was not the fact of getting my house sold, and getting moved much closer to work, but the impact it would have if it was sold in the next couple months.
Sure, it's annoying driving all the way to Macomb on a nightly basis, being 50 minutes away for a home game. But...it would be a huge stress to pack up and try to get moved right in the middle of the season. My six-month contract with the realtor just expired, and I renewed for another six months. Houses typically don't sell in the winter months, so I am fully expecting a spring/summer (HOPEFULLY 2011) sale. If it does not, I will just have to go down the landlord route, and rent my house out. Anyways....let's talk basketball!
This morning I went over my December schedule, well sort of. In mapping out the month, I realized I was on pace to surpass the 75-broadcast mark by the New Year. That is the 7th week of the season. I should be at 75 broadcasts through 9 weeks of the season, to be on pace to 150 games. Also, just to compare, last year my 23rd broadcast came on December 3rd. I will be at 33 broadcasts on the same date this year. My 32nd broadcast last year came on December 21st. With that said, I am very happy with how this year's quest is going. In my third week, I am much more comfortable with how things are turning out. Honestly, I was very nervous during week one, and it actually wasn't all that fun because I was stressing too much. Things are much looser now, and it's back to being a lot of fun, especially with some of the road trips I have planned this year. It will certainly be a season to remember.
Tonight marked the second week of Western Big 6 action. Heading into the season, it seemed like an almost wide-open race, with Moline the favorite again, since they have had a stranglehold on the league the past few years. Alleman gave the Maroons quite the game in the first week, with Moline coming out on top by a point. Rock Island beat United Township by six points, and Galesburg ran roughshod over Quincy. This would be a big test for the Silver Streaks and the Rocks.
After getting to the gym and setting up, I went down to talk with Rocky coach Thad Hoover. Senior starter, Telis Garcia, dislocated her thumb at the Illinois Math & Science Academy Tournament. I'd much rather take on IMSA in basketball than scholastic bowl! Garcia will miss six to eight weeks.
Shavonne Brewer, just a sophomore, is averaging 18.3 points/game for Rock Island through four games. She really stood out as a freshman last year, and is poised to have a breakout year. On the injury front, Galesburg sophomore Rainee Sibley will miss the game after hurting her ankle over the weekend. She should be back in action next week.
Before the game, "Country" Jim Wyman visited our broadcast booth. My broadcast partner Jimmie Carr calls "Country Jim," and I haven't asked why. Wyman talked about getting mentioned in my blog from last Thursday, when we went to Ruby Tuesday's in Quincy after the GHS/Quincy game. Tonight, Jim mentioned to Jimmie that they start their own blog, since Coach Massey has entered the blogging world as well. Not a bad idea at all!
The Silver Streaks were on fire to start the game, jumping out to a 22-8 lead after the first quarter. Galesburg is a hot first quarter team, I noticed looking at their stats through six games, outscoring their opponents 124-86 in that quarter. Galesburg has scored 141 points in the 2nd quarter, and just 89 and 88 points in the final two quarters.
After that hot start, Rock Island picked it up in the 2nd quarter, outscoring the Streaks 22-9. The Rocks really took over control of the game, and despite leading, it almost felt like Galesburg was playing from behind, even leading my double-digits. The lead just kept getting smaller and smaller. Galesburg led 31-30 at halftime.
One of the boldest moves in the first half was used by coach Hoover in the first quarter. His post, Sarita Goldsmith (12.3 ppg) picked up her THIRD foul just 2:34 into the game. He kept her in most of the first quarter with three fouls, and even most of the second quarter. Goldsmith picked up her fourth foul late in the third quarter, and fouled out in the final minutes of the game. His bold move paid off! By the way, coach Hoover won his 200th game against (Elmhurst) Timothy Christian at the IMSA Thanksgiving Tournament. His overall coaching record now stands at (201-41).
Galesburg held on to a slim lead in the second half, and increased it up to three points heading into the fourth quarter. The Streaks led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, winning 68-61.
Jessica Howard and Jamie Johnson each scored 13 points for Galesburg. Howard was honored before the game with a game ball for scoring her 1,000th career point earlier in the season. Rock Island was led by Sarita Goldsmith and Shavonne Brewer's 13 points.
The Streaks missed out on the triple cheeseburgers (making 13 three-pointers) again, going 10-46 from the three-point line. Galesburg was 24-36 from the free throw line. Rock Island was in foul trouble much of the game, and the Rocks went to the line just 13 times (6-13).
Name of the Game: Rock Island's AmUnique Washington gets my Name of the Game award for her, ahem, unique name.
Views from the Road: Speaking of unique, one traveler on Route 34 outside of Galesburg got into the holiday spirit by attaching a lighted wreath to the grill of their Cadillac.
Postgame Meal: Even though I try to limit my trips to the drive-thru, McDonald's was all-too enticing. I had the two cheeseburger meal with a large Coke and large fries. My shirts continue to get smaller.

The rat race of broadcasting a game nearly every night of the week started to catch up with my scheduling. I will be doing a much better job at advanced scheduling, and until this point, have done a good job with planning. However, this broadcast was one of those planned just a couple days in advance.
It would have been a little easier (drive wise) if the game were being played at Alwood High School, but it was in Cambridge. The drive is just about 15 minutes further, so not that bad.

The rat race of broadcasting a game nearly every night of the week started to catch up with my scheduling. I will be doing a much better job at advanced scheduling, and until this point, have done a good job with planning. However, this broadcast was one of those planned just a couple days in advance.
