My Most Difficult Broadcast

Toughest Pronunciation of My Career
(11/25/05)
Bushnell-Prairie City vs. Lombard College Prep

In a previous blog I mentioned the tricky pronunciations of Teutopolis at the Charleston Holiday Tournament. Nothing compares to a Saturday in Bushnell.

I was broadcasting games for 104.7 WLMD (Macomb/Bushnell) during the 2005-06 season, covering mainly the B-PC Spartans. Covering a void in the Spartan Tip-Off Classic was a team from the west suburbs, Lombard College Prep, a complete unknown.

Game 77: Galesburg vs. Teutopolis (Boy's Basketball)

Game 77
Galesburg vs. Teutopolis (Boy's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament Championship
(12/29/10)

I was pretty close on my 9:30 tip-off prediction, it was actually 9:35! As we went to break during our pregame show, I was beginning to calculate my arrival at home. Early estimates pegged a 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. homecoming.

Game 76: Galesburg vs. Teutopolis (Girl's Basketball)

Game 76
Galesburg vs. Teutopolis (Girl's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament Championship
(12/29/10)

The schedule of the holiday tournament had the girl's championship game tipping off at 7:00, with the boy's tipping off at 8:15. That's not wishful thinking, that's just downright impossible.

Game 75: Charleston vs. Effingham (Boy's Basketball)

Game 75
Charleston vs. Effingham (Boy's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament (5th place game)
(12/29/10)

It occurred to me as lunch time approached, that I hadn't eaten any fast food in my three days on the road in Charleston. There was a string of three fast food stops in my trips to Sterling, DeKalb, and Crystal Lake last week. That is just three fast food stops in the last two-plus weeks. Not bad, however I wouldn't exactly call my meals healthy while in Charleston, which includes a heaping and never-ending plate of Ultimate Nachos from Buffalo Wild Wings, an order of Asian Zing wings on a previous BWW trip, and the Cody's Pretzel Burger at Cody's.

Game 74: Paris vs. Decatur Eisenhower (Girl's Basketball)

Game 74
Paris vs. Decatur Eisenhower (Girl's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament (5th place game)
(12/29/10)

The Paris Lady Tigers battled the Lady Panthers of Decatur Eisenhower for 5th place at the Charleston Tournament. This was my first look at Eisenhower during the tournament. In fact, I hadn't seen a few of the teams out of the Gold pool. They played in different sessions, or a different gym in pool play.

Game 73: Taylorville vs. Rantoul (Boy's Basketball)

Game 73
Taylorville vs. Rantoul (Boy's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament (5th place game)
(12/29/10)

There was really no plan for today's schedule of broadcasts. It was going to be a "practice round." Honestly, these games with very little planning really help my normal broadcasts. Sure that sounds funny, but these are the games that keep me on my feet and are a huge challenge. I must memorize two entirely foreign rosters in a matter of minutes before tip off. Despite being poor form in a broadcast, it is great practice, almost like a mind exercise. It makes remembering names that much easier.

Game 72: Galesburg vs. Rantoul (Boy's Basketball)

Game 72
Galesburg vs. Rantoul (Boy's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament
(12/28/10)

Just like Mattoon, Rantoul was a game that Galesburg could win or lose. After watching the Eagles play Mattoon on Monday, I felt that the Silver Streaks were the better team, and best in the pool.

Rantoul features Travis Britt, a 6'3" junior that is back in Rantoul after spending his first two high school seasons at Culver Military Academy in Indiana. He is receiving interest from Indiana, Dayton, Drake, and Illinois State.

Game 71: Galesburg vs. Rantoul (Girl's Basketball)

Game 71
Galesburg vs. Rantoul (Girl's Basketball)

(12/28/10)

After lunch, Jimmie and I had some time before getting over to Charleston High School. He used my laptop to catch up on emails and such, and I returned to my room, watched ESPN and read the newspaper.

Game 70

(12/28/10)

One of those quick transitions from postgame show to pregame show. In fact, just a :30 commercial was the only thing that broke up the two shows. In the end, all of the Galesburg boy's and girl's games will be played back-to-back. It certainly has its ups and downs. For the radio station, we can save on hours for our board operators back at the studio. However, for the broadcasters, and listeners, its tough because we don't have time to have an ample pregame show for the boys.

Game 69: Galesburg vs. Paris (Girl's Basketball)

Game 69
Galesburg vs. Paris (Girl's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament
(12/28/10)

When I talked with Silver Streaks head coach Evan Massey about his team's ability to shoot well in non-conference, tournament games early in the morning, I never would have thought the team would come out shooting the way they did, beating Paris 88-57.

Game 68: Galesburg vs. Effingham (Boy's Basketball)

Game 68
Galesburg vs. Effingham (Boy's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament
(12/27/10)

One of the top teams in this tournament, will be playing in the opposite pool. It is a school with a mascot I mentioned in my previous entry, the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes. Rob Calhoun and I had a discussion about some of the town pronunciations in this Charleston/Mattoon area.

Game 67: Galesburg vs. Effingham (Girl's Basketball)

Galesburg vs. Effingham (Girl's Basketball)
Charleston Holiday Tournament
(12/27/10)

Holiday tournament time! My travels took me from Galesburg to Sterling to DeKalb last week, with layovers in Annawan and Crystal Lake. After spending the weekend at home for Christmas, I returned home on Sunday night. It would be a brief stay, just about 10 hours, before a 4 a.m. Monday wakeup call to head to Charleston.

Merry Christmas: By the Numbers Update

What a year! Christmas is a great time to reflect on the things that we are fortunate to have. As I embarked on the Quest 2: 150, I never realized how the calendar would benefit my journey. In my years of broadcasting, Christmas has, at times, been a quick in and out with family.

Game 66: Vocational vs. Hinsdale South (Boy's Basketball)

Game 66
Vocational vs. Hinsdale South (Boy's Basketball)
Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament
12/23/10

The final game of the night featured the Vocational Cavaliers and the Hinsdale South Hornets. The winner moves on to Monday night's championship game against Evanston.

Hinsdale South jumped out to a 17-9 lead after the 1st quarter, and Phil George scored 12 first quarter points. He hit a three-pointer in the first minute of the second quarter, the only scoring the Hornets would have before halftime. Vocational would go on a 14-0 run to enter halftime, leading 24-20.

12/23/10

After wrapping up the DeKalb/Jefferson broadcast, we switched out equipment and used my mixer board and equipment with the DeKalb camera and computer for the iHigh broadcast.

Once the equipment was set up, I talked with the assistant coaches for the Mustangs and Wildkits, to get starting lineups and pronunciations. Amazingly, I pronounced each of the tough Metea Valley names correctly. The names below.

My hotel in DeKalb was just two blocks away from the NIU Convocation Center, where I THOUGHT the Thursday games were being held. As I checked out of my room at 8:00 a.m. I grabbed the DeKalb Daily Chronicle. As my car warmed up, I read the sports page.

Game 63: Montini vs. Hononegah (Girl's Basketball)

Game 63
Montini vs. Hononegah (Girl's Basketball)
Sterling Shootout
12/22/10

I had the privilege of sitting around some very nice Hononegah fans for this game. They were friendly and complimentary.

Montini head coach Jason Nichols is one of the more colorful coaches I have seen. In fact, at some points, his more fiery moments are reminiscent of the Chris Farley character, Matt Flynn. Unfortunately for Nichols, one of his Farley moments garnered him a techincal foul in the game against Hononegah.

Game 62: Sterling vs. Moline (Girl's Basketball)

Game 62
Sterling vs. Moline (Girl's Basketball)
Sterling Shootout
12/22/10

My friend, Dale Dykeman, is an assistant volleyball coach at Sterling High School. He came up during the Sterling/Moline game, and made arrangements to meet up after the game. Cody Cutter, from Northern Illinois Sports Beat, sat down to cover the Golden Warriors in their game against the Maroons.

Game 61: Richwoods vs. Freeport (Girl's Basketball)

Game 61
Richwoods vs. Freeport (Girl's Basketball)
Sterling Shootout
12/22/10

Before the game, I met Tom Cunningham. He is the father of Richwoods guard Maggie Cunningham. We talked a little Richwoods basketball, along with the teams in the Sterling Shootout.

Game 60: Moline vs. Montini (Girl's Basketball)

Game 60
Moline vs. Montini (Girl's Basketball)
Sterling Shootout
12/22/10

This was the game I was most comfortable announcing, since I have very familiar with the Maroons, and the Lady Broncos are the defending Class 3A state champions, and I have followed the team closely.

However, Moline has an all-new look, with just a couple girls returning. Many of the names were unfamiliar. Joshua Welge of the Daily Herald took a seat next to me at the press table at the top of the bleachers. We talked Montini basketball, and also a little Western Big 6 girl's basketball. He asked me who the best team in the WB6 was, and I said it's tough to say, but quite possibly Galesburg (trying not to be bias!). He asked if Moline was 2nd best, and I said from what I have seen, they may be the 4th best, but it's hard to say that with a coach like Steve Ford on the bench. Regardless, it will be a fun year to follow Western Big 6 girl's basketball, with Moline, Galesburg, United Township, and Rock Island all battling for the league crown.

Game 59: Richwoods vs. Hononegah (Girl's Basketball)

Game 59
Richwoods vs. Hononegah (Girl's Basketball)
Sterling Shootout
12/22/10

With just a couple cups of coffee and a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast, hunger set in during the second game of the day. I headed to the concession stand for a bottle of water and a bag of popcorn. Very fast service, and what would become my lunch was just $2.00. Very good popcorn, too. I can not rate popcorn, because generally I don't have any concession stand popcorn. This popcorn was not salty....I hate salt, so I can be a harsh critic of popcorn if any amount of salt is present.

Game 58: Sterling vs. Freeport (Girl's Basketball)

Game 58
Sterling vs. Freeport (Girl's Basketball)

12/22/10

A 7:00 a.m. wakeup call, which is sleeping in by a couple hours. First things first, coffee and newspaper! After getting ready, I packed up my mom's Ford Escape and was off to Sterling. Why mom's Escape?

Before leaving for Galesburg on Tuesday afternoon, I scheduled an oil change, then received a phone call. On the other end of the phone, these words were uttered: "You're car is dangerous to drive."

Game 57: Sterling @ Galesburg (Boy's Basketball)

Game 57
Sterling @ Galesburg (Boy's Basketball)
12/21/10

Tonight's game between the host Silver Streaks and the Golden Warriors from Sterling was scheduled for a 7:00 tip-off with no sophomore game. It is considered a tournament game as part of the Martin Luther King Tournament, that will resume in mid-January. I like the fact there is no prelim game, ensuring a timely tip, along with a 30-minute earlier start.

Game 56: Rock Island vs. North Scott (Boy's Basketball)

Game 56
Rock Island vs. North Scott (Boy's Basketball)
Genesis/PSP Iowa/Illinois Shootout @ Augustana College
(12/18/10)

The final game of the night pits the Lancers of North Scott against the Rocks of Rock Island. Both games come in undefeated. Rock Island is (8-0) while North Scott is (5-0).

Rock Island broadcasts games online through iHigh. The two broadcasters set up next to me, and we talked a little bit before the game. Since I cover the Western Big 6, I am able to keep up with the Rocks through their site. They also do an interview segment with head coach Thom Sigel on a weekly basis.

Game 55
United Township vs. Assumption (Boy's Basketball)

After feasting in the hospitality room, it was back to the booth for another equipment switcheroo. I wanted to make sure all of the radio equipment was packed away, for a quick escape after a long, long day.

Game 54: Galesburg vs. Bettendorf (Boy's Basketball)

Game 54
Galesburg vs. Bettendorf
Iowa/Illinois Shootout
(12/18/10)

After broadcast #53, I had to do an equipment switcheroo. This is why I took the Geneseo/Davenport Central game off. Along with switching out equipment, I needed to do a little extra homework on the Bettendorf Bulldogs, and get the pregame interview with Galesburg coach Mike Reynolds.

Game 53: Alleman vs. Pleasant Valley (Boy's Basketball)

Game 53
Alleman vs. Pleasant Valley (Boy's Basketball)
Iowa/Illinois Shootout
(12/18/10)

The second game of the day pits the Alleman Pioneers against the Pleasant Valley Spartans. In broadcasting a plethora of games, it is nice to see the teams that Galesburg (main team I broadcast for) will be playing in the future, helping me dissect the matchups a little more.

A quick turn around from broadcasting the United Township/Galesburg on Friday night, getting home at midnight, and waking up at 5:00 a.m. to head back to the office for some weekend work. That's why I invested in some 5-hour energy, when that 3:00 drain would hit me at the Carver Center at Augustana College later in the day.

Game 51

Christmas parties at work...not one of my favorite events. In all honesty, they are not all that bad, it's just very difficult to get work done in a bad part of the day, and they are usually on a Friday, my busiest day of the week.

If you haven't guessed already, our employee Christmas party was today. The food was excellent, catered by a restaurant...that is new I believe. Lasagna was what I had, and it was good. I passed on the pie, but heard from co-workers it was delicious.

Just 1/3 of the way into the Quest 2: 150, it came to my attention that the interior of my car is..."disgusting." While I understood the amount of trash in the back seat needed to be cleaned out, the extend I wasn't quite sure.

Game 49: United vs. Abingdon (Girl's Basketball)

Game 49
United vs. Abingdon (Girl's Basketball)
Knoxville/Abingdon Tournament
(12/15/10)

Hospitality ranks as an A+ at Abingdon High School.  In fact, AHS is always one of my favorite broadcasting stops throughout the year, as everyone is super hospitable.  I was disappointed when Toby Whiteman stepped down as Athletic Director last year, but not a thing was lost when Joe Nichols took over the role as A.D.

I've known Joe for several years now, and he is a Macomb native.  Earlier in the day, we exchanged emails, and it went like this...

Game 48: Brimfield vs. Knoxville (Girl's Basketball)

Game 48
Brimfield vs. Knoxville (Girl's Basketball)

(12/13/10)

The second game of the night features a pair of Prairieland Conference teams. I will admit that I was down on Brimfield heading into the season, picking them to finish somewhere around 7th in the conference. Ouch, they are off to a 10-2 start heading into this tournament game against league-foe Knoxville.

You would think someone in my position would have no problem being interviewed, but that is not the case. I get nervous before getting interviewed. The fact could actually be that rarely I am the interviewee, rather the interviewer.

Game 46: Galesburg @ Metamora (Boy's Basketball)

Game 46
Galesburg @ Metamora (Boy's Basketball)
12/11/10

The talk of the last several days has been an impending blizzard. Throughout Saturday, it looked as though we would get just what was predicted. Snowfall expected between 2-8 inches, 60 mph wind gusts, and bitterly cold wind chills. Fortunately, it was not scheduled to hit the area until after midnight.

Jimmie Carr and I made the trip over to Metamora, in a cold December rain. In fact, my rear view mirror had frozen over from the rain. The roads were clear, and it as a quick trip to Metamora.

Game 45: Peoria Notre Dame @ Galesburg (Girl's Basketball)

Game 45
Peoria Notre Dame @ Galesburg (Girl's Basketball)
Galesburg Mid-Winter Classic
12/11/10

After my first broadcast wrapped up, I was disappointed that I didn't schedule the next game, Alleman vs. Normal U-High. Originally looking at the schedule, I didn't want to squeeze another broadcast in between Galesburg games, but failed to recognize the long break between games two and three at the tournament. Lousy planning on my part.

Galesburg Mid-Winter Classic
12/11/10

Once again at the Galesburg Mid-Winter Classic, I was running behind. This same tardiness hit me last year. Normally, I am at the gym a couple hours before a broadcast.

These 9:00 a.m. games get me. Here is example "A" of why it is a pain in my rear living an hour away from my "home" games. While I wasn't late, per se, I was still rushed when arriving to John Thiel Gymnasium.

Game 43
Rock Island @ Galesburg (Boy's Basketball)
(12/10/10)

A Christmas Tale

My most memorable Christmas gift was given to me when I was a junior in high school. Thinking about it, and comparing to other gifts, it seems silly that a video game takes the top honor. It was the video game, NBA Live '98 for Sega Genesis. Even stranger, I was never a "gamer." Sure, as a kid I grew up on Super Tecmo Bowl on Nintendo, and would spend 12 hours with a group of guys/kids playing tournaments into the wee hours. Why does a video game beat out my first gigantic late 90's cell phone, a flat screen TV, etc.? No idea, just one of my quirks, I guess.

Game 42: Galesburg @ United Township (Girl's Basketball)

Game 42
Galesburg @ United Township (Girl's Basketball)
12/9/10

Back pain, back pain, back pain. For some reason, some (at times) unbearable back pain took over throughout the day. Most of the day it was uncomfortable, but once I would get out of my chair, I almost fell to the floor with weakness in my right leg. It all began yesterday with some back discomfort, and morphed into some super pain today. The extent of my physical labor on an average day consists of carrying a duffle bag filled with headsets and broadcast equipment, though it can get pretty hairy at the fax machine sometimes.

Game 41: Annawan @ United (Girl's Basketball)

Game 41
Annawan @ United (Girl's Basketball)
(12/8/10)

The case of the wayward cell phone strikes again. Tonight's broadcast had all of the uncomfortable elements. First, a teeny tiny area to broadcast from in the weight room that overlooks the gym at United High School. Second, it had to be 80+ degrees, by far the hottest gym of the season, and the equipment once again gave us hiccups.

Game 40
North Fulton @ Brimfield (Girl's Basketball)
(12/6/10)

We interrupt this broadcast for technical difficulties...

It was close, but I was able to get all but the first 40 seconds of action. One of the biggest troubles in broadcasting is problems that can arise with equipment. When I first began broadcasting online with my own equipment, I was told that there are a few things that could occur and cause troubles. I find out quickly that first season.

Game 39: Springfield Lanphier vs. Chicago Orr (Boy's Basketball)

Game 39
Springfield Lanphier vs. Chicago Orr (Boy's Basketball)
Athleticare/1450 Shootout (Springfield)
12/4/10

After the Whitney Young/Springfield Southeast game, it would be tough to top that classic. Two players I was interested to see in this game were Lanphier freshman Larry Austin Jr. and Orr senior Mycheal Henry. Austin is ranked 20th nationally in the freshman class by ESPNU, while Henry is one of the state's top seniors, heading to the University of Illinois.

Game 38: Whitney Young vs. Springfield Southeast (Boy's Basketball)

Game 38
Whitney Young vs. Springfield Southeast (Boy's Basketball)
Athleticare/1450 Shootout (Springfield)
12/4/10

What a game I was expecting in this one, and it surely did not disappoint. I didn't know much, or anything, about the Spartans, but Whitney Young is a team that is ballyhooed in basketball circles, not just in Illinois, but at a national level with the amount of prospects on the Dolphins team.

Game 37: Peoria Central vs. Champaign Central (Boy's Basketball)

Game 37
Peoria Central vs. Champaign Central (Boy's Basketball)
Athleticare/1450 Shootout (Springfield)
12/4/10

A milestone was on the line in this matchup, with Champaign Central Maroons coach Scott Davis was seeking his 300th career coaching win. Davis and the Maroons defeated Normal West on Friday night for his 299th career win. That milestone would have to wait, after the Peoria Central Lions would win, 61-50.

Game 36: Decatur MacArthur vs. Rich South (Boy's Basketball)

Game 36
Decatur MacArthur vs. Rich South (Boy's Basketball)
Athleticare/1450 Shootout (@ Springfield)
12/4/10

It's probably been mentioned in an earlier blog, but this will certainly be the last year for a "Quest." It is very much fun, however stressful at the same time. In my early, early plans for 2011-12, I still plan on taking these types of road trips to see some of the best teams in the state, but my weekday broadcast schedule will be scaled down, in order to better prepare my broadcasts.

Game 35: Sacred Heart-Griffin vs. Champaign Centennial (Boy's Basketball)

Game 35
Sacred Heart-Griffin vs. Champaign Centennial (Boy's Basketball)
Athleticare/1450 Shootout (Springfield)
12/4/10

The toughest thing about blogging about each game I broadcast, is when broadcasting multiple games in one day. You may be wondering why that is. I learned very early on in last year's Quest for the Century Club, that in recapping the games (which I started doing the first few games), it was very boring. In fact, after I re-read the first three game blogs, I realized that nobody would want to read this.

Game 34: Chatham Glenwood vs. Troy Triad (Boy's Basketball)

Game 34
Chatham Glenwood vs. Troy Triad (Boy's Basketball)
Athleticare/1450 Shootout (@ Springfield)
12/4/10

A big thanks to Al Hartwig for sending me his compilation of boy's basketball schedules, it will be very, very useful on planning weekend trips and weekday games that are out of my immediate area. He clued me in on this shootout at Springfield Prairie Capital Convention Center.

Kudos to the people who lined up the teams at this shootout. I know that Jason Speaks of Illinois Basketball Services had a big hand in the shootout. Several Division-One players would be showcased throughout the day.

These trips are my favorites, and probably for my readers, get more enjoyment out of the blogs because I have more time on the road to see things, think about things, and encounter strange occurrences. The setup of this blog is sort of an "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac meets "Beyond the Boxscore" by Matt Schuckman (Quincy Herald-Whig blog).

My plans were to head out of town at 9:00 a.m. and be in Springfield shortly before 11:00. This would give me time to find a parking spot, get setup, etc. before my first broadcast at noon.

Before I left town, I grabbed my typical morning coffee (a large today, due to the road trip), and stopped at K-Mart for my bulk pickup of Vitamin C and throat lozenges. I grabbed a pack of strawberry flavored Vitamin C drops, citrus Vitamin C drops, and strawberry swirl (or something like that) throat lozenges. In the store, I ran into Rich Egger from Tri-States Radio and we briefly discussed the Cubs offseason options. We were both in agreement over the choice of Mike Quade as the next Cubs skipper.

One thing I like about Saturday morning road trips are the coaches shows on radio stations. Driving Route 67 and Route 97 down to Springfield, I knew I could pickup something, whether it be out of Pittsfield (WBBA), Quincy (WGEM), or Jacksonville (WVIL). Sure enough, as I passed through Rushville I stopped on 97.5 WBBA, and listened to Jack Hull interview Carrollton Hawks basketball coach Jeff Krumweide. I first met "Coach K" last summer during the American Legion baseball division tournament in Moline. He is the head coach of the Eldred team. He led Eldred to the Division tournament, which was the first year for Legion baseball in Eldred/Carrollton in at least 50 years. Before the Eldred/Galesburg game, the coin flip (for home team purposes) was held in the grass behind the stands and concessions at Black Hawk College. The coin was thrown into the air...into the grass. It landed half heads, half tales. It was a unique coin flip!

When I was getting things in order before I left for home, I noticed my calendar in my office. December remains empty, because I haven't filled out my schedule yet (it's on the to-do list). I imagined what the calendar will look like after my broadcast schedule is finalized for the month. Glancing at the "December 2010," I thought...it's gonna be a long December. Of course, the Counting Crows instantly played in my mind, with their hit, "A Long December." After listening to WBBA's coaches show, I continuously hit the scan on my radio until finding something worth listening to. No offense to WBBA, their show following the coaches corner was an outdoors show, not my cup of tea. Guess what song came on? "A Long December." I had to listen, as it set the tone, not only for the entire month, but my long December day!

After gassing up in Pleasant Plains at Casey's, I flipped on AM 1450, who sponsored the shootout, they were getting set to go on with the first game of the day, Cairo vs. Springfield Calvary. They mentioned that Cairo had just arrived, after playing in DuQuoin on Friday night. Interestingly enough, the Pilots would play their game in Springfield, and then head back to DuQuoin and play AGAIN on Saturday night. By the way, former Lanphier standout and Fighting Illini Rich McBride is the new head coach at Cairo.

Little did I know, getting to the Prairie Capital Convention Center would be easier than expected! For some reason, I tend to get lost EVERY time I go to Springfield. Not only Springfield...every time I've gone to the Riverton Shootout, I've gotten lost either going to, or coming from, Riverton. EVEN with a Garmin!

Funniest Sign: A Springfield Casey's General Store had a sign out front touting: "Donuts and Beer Now Here." Forget Wheaties...Casey's introduces your new Breakfast of Champions!

I had an interesting conversation with the parking lot attendant...

(Pulling up to the attendant)
Attendant: "Parking is $5."
Me: "Is there a lot for media?"
Attendant: "No, this is the only parking lot, it's $5."
Me: "Okay." (handed him a $10 bill)
Attendant: "It's $5."
Me: (curiously looking at him after handing him a ten). "Can you tell me where the pass gate is?"
Attendant: "Oh, I don't know that, I just work for the parking lot."
Me: "Okay...how about the entrance?"
Attendant: "Oh...the entrance...yeah, it's right over there (pointing across the street). I didn't understand when you said pass gate, you must be from Chicago."
Me: "Well...from the north, thanks for the help."

I think we were both equally confused!

There was no pass gate (which is the gate where media/coaches/teams have quick access to sign in), just a general entrance. I found Jason Speaks, and I set up on press row.

Chatham Glenwood and Troy Triad lacked some offense in the early going of the noon game. It was just 6-5 after the first quarter. The Titans, playing in their own backyard, scored 13 points in the 2nd quarter, and led 18-14 at halftime. Tyler Thurston (6'4" Jr.) had 11 of Glenwood's 18 points. Glenwood would go on to defeat the Knights, 52-36.

Thurston finished with a game-high 16 points, and was named the game's MVP. Nick Sharp added 13 points, and Craig Fuchs scored 11 points. Triad was led by Jake Lewis with 13 points.

Name of the Game: I chose Miles McAdams (6'0" So.) from Glenwood over Triad's Tyler Noyes (6'3" Jr.).

Game 33: Galesburg @ Quincy (Boy's Basketball)

Game 33
Galesburg @ Quincy (Boy's Basketball)
12/3/10

Before I left the house Friday morning, I noticed something hanging on my living room wall. It was a motivational quote from Vince Lombardi. Why did I read it today, I don't know. It was one of those motivational quotes that was framed and given to me at the end of the year by my boss a few years ago. Some people hang pictures of family, trees or flowers, or dogs playing poker. I hang work stuff.

Game 32: Rock Island @ Galesburg (Girl's Basketball)

Game 32
Rock Island @ Galesburg (Girl's Basketball)
(12/2/10)

Driving home tonight, I contemplated the everlasting attempted sale of my house. Before the season started, I worried about how much stress it would put on me if I didn't get the house sold, and the many miles extra I would be driving. At this point, it's very annoying, but not as bad as I had expected. Of course, we're just three weeks into the basketball season. It's an 18-week season (altogether).

What I had going through my head was not the fact of getting my house sold, and getting moved much closer to work, but the impact it would have if it was sold in the next couple months.

Sure, it's annoying driving all the way to Macomb on a nightly basis, being 50 minutes away for a home game. But...it would be a huge stress to pack up and try to get moved right in the middle of the season. My six-month contract with the realtor just expired, and I renewed for another six months. Houses typically don't sell in the winter months, so I am fully expecting a spring/summer (HOPEFULLY 2011) sale. If it does not, I will just have to go down the landlord route, and rent my house out. Anyways....let's talk basketball!

This morning I went over my December schedule, well sort of. In mapping out the month, I realized I was on pace to surpass the 75-broadcast mark by the New Year. That is the 7th week of the season. I should be at 75 broadcasts through 9 weeks of the season, to be on pace to 150 games. Also, just to compare, last year my 23rd broadcast came on December 3rd. I will be at 33 broadcasts on the same date this year. My 32nd broadcast last year came on December 21st. With that said, I am very happy with how this year's quest is going. In my third week, I am much more comfortable with how things are turning out. Honestly, I was very nervous during week one, and it actually wasn't all that fun because I was stressing too much. Things are much looser now, and it's back to being a lot of fun, especially with some of the road trips I have planned this year. It will certainly be a season to remember.

Tonight marked the second week of Western Big 6 action. Heading into the season, it seemed like an almost wide-open race, with Moline the favorite again, since they have had a stranglehold on the league the past few years. Alleman gave the Maroons quite the game in the first week, with Moline coming out on top by a point. Rock Island beat United Township by six points, and Galesburg ran roughshod over Quincy. This would be a big test for the Silver Streaks and the Rocks.

After getting to the gym and setting up, I went down to talk with Rocky coach Thad Hoover. Senior starter, Telis Garcia, dislocated her thumb at the Illinois Math & Science Academy Tournament. I'd much rather take on IMSA in basketball than scholastic bowl! Garcia will miss six to eight weeks.

Shavonne Brewer, just a sophomore, is averaging 18.3 points/game for Rock Island through four games. She really stood out as a freshman last year, and is poised to have a breakout year. On the injury front, Galesburg sophomore Rainee Sibley will miss the game after hurting her ankle over the weekend. She should be back in action next week.

Before the game, "Country" Jim Wyman visited our broadcast booth. My broadcast partner Jimmie Carr calls "Country Jim," and I haven't asked why. Wyman talked about getting mentioned in my blog from last Thursday, when we went to Ruby Tuesday's in Quincy after the GHS/Quincy game. Tonight, Jim mentioned to Jimmie that they start their own blog, since Coach Massey has entered the blogging world as well. Not a bad idea at all!

The Silver Streaks were on fire to start the game, jumping out to a 22-8 lead after the first quarter. Galesburg is a hot first quarter team, I noticed looking at their stats through six games, outscoring their opponents 124-86 in that quarter. Galesburg has scored 141 points in the 2nd quarter, and just 89 and 88 points in the final two quarters.

After that hot start, Rock Island picked it up in the 2nd quarter, outscoring the Streaks 22-9. The Rocks really took over control of the game, and despite leading, it almost felt like Galesburg was playing from behind, even leading my double-digits. The lead just kept getting smaller and smaller. Galesburg led 31-30 at halftime.

One of the boldest moves in the first half was used by coach Hoover in the first quarter. His post, Sarita Goldsmith (12.3 ppg) picked up her THIRD foul just 2:34 into the game. He kept her in most of the first quarter with three fouls, and even most of the second quarter. Goldsmith picked up her fourth foul late in the third quarter, and fouled out in the final minutes of the game. His bold move paid off! By the way, coach Hoover won his 200th game against (Elmhurst) Timothy Christian at the IMSA Thanksgiving Tournament. His overall coaching record now stands at (201-41).

Galesburg held on to a slim lead in the second half, and increased it up to three points heading into the fourth quarter. The Streaks led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, winning 68-61.

Jessica Howard and Jamie Johnson each scored 13 points for Galesburg. Howard was honored before the game with a game ball for scoring her 1,000th career point earlier in the season. Rock Island was led by Sarita Goldsmith and Shavonne Brewer's 13 points.

The Streaks missed out on the triple cheeseburgers (making 13 three-pointers) again, going 10-46 from the three-point line. Galesburg was 24-36 from the free throw line. Rock Island was in foul trouble much of the game, and the Rocks went to the line just 13 times (6-13).

Name of the Game: Rock Island's AmUnique Washington gets my Name of the Game award for her, ahem, unique name.

Views from the Road: Speaking of unique, one traveler on Route 34 outside of Galesburg got into the holiday spirit by attaching a lighted wreath to the grill of their Cadillac.

Postgame Meal: Even though I try to limit my trips to the drive-thru, McDonald's was all-too enticing. I had the two cheeseburger meal with a large Coke and large fries. My shirts continue to get smaller.

Game 31: Rockridge @ Ridgewood (Boy's Basketball)

Game 31
Rockridge @ Ridgewood (Boy's Basketball)
(11/30/10)

The rat race of broadcasting a game nearly every night of the week started to catch up with my scheduling. I will be doing a much better job at advanced scheduling, and until this point, have done a good job with planning. However, this broadcast was one of those planned just a couple days in advance.

It would have been a little easier (drive wise) if the game were being played at Alwood High School, but it was in Cambridge. The drive is just about 15 minutes further, so not that bad.
