Game 18: Galesburg vs. Urbana (Boy's Basketball)

Game 18
(11/28/09)
Galesburg vs. Urbana
Galesburg Tournament

The Hall of Fame ceremony sandwiched the two games at GHS on this final night of the Galesburg Tournament. I prepared a 45-minute show on the Hall of Fame inductees with interviews that run immediately after our girl's game postgame show.

I needed some water and a quick bite before heading back in to see my friend and broadcast partner Jimmie Carr get inducted. I meandered on down to the hospitality room and grabbed one of the last bottles of water. Zach Creglow of the Galesburg Register-Mail stopped in, and we chatted about the previous game. My voice could barely hold up even in casual conversation, this next broadcast would be interesting.

I headed back into watch the rest of the ceremony. Jimmie was inducted as a Friend of GHS with Robb Strack and Tom Wilson, all of whom broadcasted Galesburg athletics for many, many years. Jimmie still provides color analysis on all of the Galesburg boy's game and a few girl's games for WAIK.

To say the Silver Streaks started this game slow, would be an understatement. Galesburg would muster just 12 points in the first half, but held Urbana to 20. Nothing would fall for the Streaks, who have struggled in a few games with shots falling.

That would all change in the second half. Victor Davis, who pulled down about eight rebounds in the first half, sparked the Streaks offense in the third quarter, collecting ten points, and went (4-4) from the free throw line right after halftime. Galesburg won the quarter (13-12), but still trailed by seven heading into the last eight minutes.

Despite shooting several, Galesburg had gone on a three-point drought. Brandon Thompson dropped one in the first quarter, but were ice cold in the second and third. Four three-pointers would drop in the fourth quarter, including the big man Victor Davis showing his range. Davis added 11 more points in the fourth quarter, and would finish with 28 points and 15 rebounds, and also went (11-13) from the charity stripe.

Galesburg would hang on for the 53-49 win over the visiting Tigers, helped by Victor Davis' fourth quarter, and two three-pointers by Chad Thompson. The Streaks went (10-14) from the free throw line in the final frame. Urbana was led by a balanced scoring attack, with five players scoring six or more points. Javarius Gay had a team-high 9 points for the Tigers.

Fortunately, Jimmie Carr conducts the postgame interview with Streaks coach Mike Reynolds, so my voice was given a brief break. It barely made it through the entire broadcast, and sounded horrible. I am pretty sure the voice was lost due to chest congestion, and not the amount of broadcasts.

As of Sunday, the voice still missing, with two broadcasts scheduled for Monday night in Williamsfield, but that looks like it will not happen, and the next broadcast would be Thursday at Rock Island.

Game 17: Galesburg vs. Peoria Richwoods (Girl's Basketball)

Game 17
(11/28/09)
Galesburg vs. (#3) Peoria Richwoods
Galesburg Tournament

A highly anticipated matchup between these two teams on Hall of Fame Night at Galesburg High School. A week ago, Springfield handed Galesburg a (96-66) loss, while Richwoods defeated the same team by double digits a night before this game.

Being in the gym all day, you would have expected me to have everything I needed, with no problems whatsoever. That appeared to be wrong with little time to spare. At GHS, we use a Marti, which transmits back to the station. However, the broadcasters cannot hear each other without a radio signal that is hooked into our broadcast headsets.

Covering multiple teams and using multiple pieces of equipment, especially when it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas tournaments, some pieces could get flip-flopped. We actually have two radios with the proper connections to our headsets, however, the GHS boy's equipment is kept by our play-by-play man, and the other radio happened to be with another broadcaster in Williamsfield.

Even though Williamsfield is a fairly short drive from Galesburg, time did not allow me to make that trip. The other set was in the Quad Cities, again no time. Having to use quick thinking, I phoned Radio Shack to inquire if they had portable digital radios, they did not. I needed to make a fast trip to Wal-Mart with just one game before we were set to air.

As I drove by Walgreen's, it dawned on me that they normally carry gadgets like the one I was in need of. As I stalked the aisles, I finally found the electronics section, and wa-la, there it was a portable digital radio for only $5. Now I would just need to head to Radio Shack for a connector. As I raced to the Sandburg Mall, I couldn't find the AM setting (we broadcast on AM 1590 WAIK). Woops, I had bought an FM-only radio.

Already near the mall, I decided to just check out K-Mart. They had a minimal selection, and I decided upon an analog AM/FM Walkman for $15. Walking swiftly, I headed to Radio Shack and for $6 found the proper connector. The pieces were in place. I contacted my broadcast partner Jimmie Carr, and the Pekin/Thornridge game was just starting the 4th quarter as I headed outside and back to my car.

I made it back to the GHS gym with time to spare, and thanks to the Booster Club stand, I was able to quickly get through the gates and to our broadcast location.

Everything worked out just fine, and the broadcast started with no problems. The game would be a great one. The crowd thickened and thickened with fans, former students, current students, and community members for Hall of Fame Night.

Playing the Class 3A third-ranked team in state, Peoria Richwoods, the Silver Streaks kept it close after a quarter, trailing 17-14. At the halftime break, the Streaks would get a standing ovation, leading the favored Knights 38-35. Galesburg had nailed seven three-pointers, more than halfway past their mark of 13, that would guarantee fans with McDonalds "3Diculous" t-shirts a free triple cheeseburger.

The big stat at the break was that Ball State-bound Katie Murphy, and heavily recruited Mariah Smith were held to just six points collectively. Both had gotten into early foul troule.

The second half was back and forth, with Richwoods taking the two-point lead (58-56) heading into the fourth quarter. After being held to just two points in the first half, Mariah Smith exploded in the second half, scoring 19 points after the break (finishing with 21), but struggled at the free throw line in the fourth quarter (2-5). As a team, the Knights went (3-7) in the final eight minutes. Meanwhile, the Streaks, having struggled all season at the line, were clutch at the charity stripe. Galesburg went (7-10) at the line in the fourth quarter.

Galesburg would hold on to a late lead, and prevail for the upset victory (80-77). The Richwoods faithful had an outspoken beef with the officiating, and coach Todd Hursey would even publicly comment to the media regarding his thoughts on the officiating.

Richwoods was whistled for 23 fouls to Galesburg's 15. The Streaks went (18-30) from the line, while Richwoods went (10-19). Mariah Smith scored a game-high 21 points, and sophomore guard Maggie Cunningham had 20 points. Galesburg's Jessica Howard scored 16 points, and Sara Baker and Mickey Rodriguez each added 15 points. The Streaks knocked down 13 three-pointers, guaranteeing a triple cheeseburger for fans wearing their t-shirts.

The game was so thrilling and back and forth, my voice started to crack, and by the end of the game, it started to go out. One more game remained, would my voice hold out?

Game 16: Peoria Woodruff vs. Chicago Harlan (Boy's Basketball)

Game 16
(11/28/09)
Peoria Woodruff vs. Chicago Harlan
Galesburg Tournament

After the Manual broadcast, had a few minutes to chat with Carl Sandburg College men's basketball coach Ryan Twaddle. Coach Twaddle has been in attendance looking at various players from the tournament's field.

Woodruff entered this game with a (3-1) record, but had struggled in the games I saw. Deontray Dorsey and Tylander Amos have had to carry the load for coach Charlie Thomas. Meanwhile, Chicago Harlan had also surprised me by not playing to the expecations, despite their (3-1) record heading into the matchup.

This will be the final year of Woodruff in the tournament, and as a school. It will be interesting on where their underclassmen end up at Peoria schools. Manual and Central seem to be the frontrunners for a majority of the Woodruff students.

The Warriors started out on a big first quarter run, fueled by Amos and Dorsey. The two combined for all 17 points. At halftime, Harlan powered ahead, 28-26. Dorsey and Amos had 26 of the 28 Warriors points. Harlan was paced by Romane Hunters's 14 points.

It was back and forth in the third quarter, with Woodruff leading by four, 45-41 heading into the fourth quarter. Deontray Dorsey lit up the second half, finishing three quarters with 27 points. Dorsey nailed seven shots, including a three-pointer just after halftime.

It was all Woodruff in the fourth quarter, most notably Dorsey. This time, Dorsey did it from the charity stripe. He went (8-9) from the line in the fourth quarter, and Woodruff went on for the 68-57 lead. Dorsey finished with 37 points, and teammate Tylander Amos scored 19 points. The Harlan Falcons got 20 points from Romane Hunter and 19 points from Dondricas Kellum.

The Warriors finished (4-1) in the Galesburg Tournament, and Chicago Harlan went (3-2). Dondricas Kellum of Harlan was named to the All-Tournament team, and both Deontray Dorsey and Tylander Amos were named to the All-Tournament team for Woodruff.

Following this game, just enough time to hit the hospitality room for some sloppy joes, and tear down the IHSSN equipment and put up the radio equipment for the two Galesburg games.

Game 15: Peoria Manual vs. Chicago Collins Academy (Boy's Basketball)

Game 15
(11/28/09)
Peoria Manual vs. Chicago Collins Academy
Galesburg Tournament

After watching 11 hours of basketball on Friday (6 complete games and parts of 3 others), I was ready for another whole day of hoops. To prepare for a long day of broadcasting (4 games), I made sure I had enough lemon drops to keep those salivary glands active through the day.

I stopped by the studios in Monmouth on my way to Galesburg to grab the Saturday sports page along with the FlipVideo camera to take video of the day's action, including the Hall of Fame ceremony at GHS later in the night.

As I pulled up to Galesburg High School shortly after noon, it was void of any cars. Much to my chagrin, there was a break following the 10:30 game, up until my first broadcast at 1:45. I drove downtown to the WAIK studios in Galesburg and filled out some scorebooks before heading back to the school shortly before 1:00.

A light crowd, as expected was on hand for the first game of the afternoon session. When I got to the gym, it was nearly an hour before tipoff, and Manual was on the floor practicing their buzzer beaters (i.e. half courters and trick shots, not the normal warmup routine that would come later).

Prior to the game, spoke with Robert Hahn of WMBD in Peoria. He had a busy day, catching some film on Manual, before heading to the Fulton County Tournament, and the Brimfield girl's tournament. Also spoke with one of the middle school coaches from Moline, who was there scouting for a future matchup against Manual.

Surprisingly, Collins Academy stayed close with Manual through the first half, trailing 24-19 after the first quater, but the Rams had extended that lead to 39-26 by halftime. Lawrence Alexander had a big first half for Manual, with three slam dunks in the first two quarters, all of his field goals. He led Manual with 10 points, while Andre Stoutmire scored 13 points by halftime.

Manual pulled ahead in the second half, as expected. The stifling Manual defense limited Collins to just eight field goals in the second half, while the Rams poured in 36 points in the second half.

Alexander scored a game-high 20 points for Manual, while Brandon Watson added 15 points, Jeff Stokes pitched in 13 points, and Marvin Jordan added 11 points. The Warriors of Chicago Collins got a team-high 13 points from Stoutmire, all in the first half.

Andrew and Marvin Jordan earned All-Tournament honors at the Galesburg Tournament, who finished (5-0) and won the tournament title outright. Video of the Rams receiving the tournament trophy can be found online at www.ihssn.net.

Game 14: Monmouth-Roseville vs. Galva (Boy's)

Game 14
(11/27/09)
Monmouth-Roseville vs. Galva
Williamsfield Thanksgiving Tournament

Next up in Billtown are the Titans and Wildcats. Galva is seeking their first win, while Monmouth-Roseville is looking for a (3-0) start. During the United broadcast, one of our sponsors is McDonalds. As John and I talked about McDonalds, I mentioned I could go for a couple double cheeseburgers.

Much to my surprise, during our Monmouth-Roseville pregame show I get a tap on the shoulder. Rick Chick, the father of Titans player Tim Chick, handed me a bag of McDonalds with two double cheeseburgers. He was in the drive-thru at McDonalds when he heard us salivating over the thought of McDonalds. A great halftime snack!

The Titans started out in a fury, taking a 19-7 lead after a quarter. Markus Hunter had a great quarter, creating six points, while Patrick Thompson found himself at the right place at the right time for a couple tip-ins. The second quarter was much slower for Mon-Rose, getting outscored by Galva 12-10 in that quarter, but led by double digits (29-19) at the break.

Monmouth-Roseville got a couple three-pointers from B.J. Salyers in the third quarter and led 43-28 heading into the final quarter. It was all Titans in the final frame, holding the Wildcats scoreless for nearly the first seven minutes. The Titans defense allowed just one free throw, outscoring Galva (17-1) in the fourth quarter.

The Titans commited 12 turnovers, and forced 27 Galva turnovers. Monmouth-Roseville saw a very balanced scoring attack, yet again. Ten players scored for the Titans, with Markus Hunter leading with 11 points, and Alex Bresnahan scored 10 points. Kile Mott scored a team-high 8 points for the Wildcats.

Monmouth-Roseville struggled at the free throw line (6-17), as did Galva (3-11). The foul situation at one point had Galva called for 18 fouls and Monmouth-Roseville just 5. The final tally was 20-9. The victory gave Monmouth-Roseville head coach Chuck Grant his 250th career coaching win in his 13th season.

Caught a few minutes of the Williamsfield/West Central game before heading back to Galesburg to take in the rest of that tournament. Galesburg took it to Thornridge, and caught the final three minutes as I arrived back at John Thiel Gym. Watched the first half of the nightcap, pitting Peoria Manual and Chicago Harlan. Thought that final game would be better, but Manual was clearly the better team.

Game 13
(11/27/09)
United vs. Henry
Williamsfield Thanksgiving Tournament

After a two-day break from broadcasting, it resumes back in Billtown for a doubleheader. I started the day over in Galesburg, watching some games at that tournament, and also took stats for the WAIK broadcast of Galesburg/Chicago Collins. Other games I caught were Peoria Manual/Thornridge, a key matchup between top three ranked Class 3A girl's teams in Springfield and Peoria Richwoods, along with the GHS/Collins game, and then caught a few minutes of Pekin/Chicago Harlan.

Met my broadcast partner John Ring at our WAIK studios in Galesburg and he drove to Williamsfield. Only two slight delays in the short 25-mile drive to Williamsfield. John missed the exit off of I-74 and drove an extra five or six miles. I just thought he knew of a quicker way, but he just talked too much and missed it. Our second holdup came on the highway just outside of Williamsfield, with John trying to make up time. An Illinois State Police trooper didn't think he should be driving that faster. As the officer approached, he recognized John as a broadcaster and asked if we were headed to the games. He said he was a former Billtown Bomber and let us off without even a warning.

We finally made it to the gym, and with time to spare. The Red Storm jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter, but committed four consecutive turnovers, and the Henry Mallards inched back into the game, tying it at 10-10 before the end of the quarter. United sophomore Jake Gavin nailed a three to break the tie after the first quarter.

United took advantage of Mallards turnovers in the second quarter, and took a 22-15 lead into halftime. Red Storm junior Alex Gavin, a returning All-Conference pick had 13 points at the break, and finished with a game-high 21 points.

The Red Storm led 31-23 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Henry was able to knock down just two field goals, along with going (4-10) at the free throw line. United would prevail 45-31 to pick up their first win (1-2) of the season. Henry drops to (0-3). Henry received balanced scoring, Kenny Swartz finished with 7 points. The Mallards committed 26 turnovers and shot just (7-16) from the free throw line.

Game 12: Galesburg @ Quincy (Girl's)

Game 12
(11/24/09)
Galesburg @ Quincy

The Western Big 6 girl's basketball season began at QHS for the Galesburg Silver Streaks. The Blue Devils play in the small auxilary gym at Quincy High, a broadcasters nightmare. Our broadcast table in the corner of the gym was shared with the other radio station in town just behind the Blue Devils bench.

Quincy's girl's hoops program has struggled in recent years, but the Blue Devils have some talent in (6'2") freshman Jordan Fletcher and quick and scrappy guard Shelby Wires. Tori Kuhn was lost to a transfer to Quincy Notre Dame (not the first transfer lost to QND).

The game started out back and forth between the teams. The Streaks trailed by two after one quarter. All Galesburg points in the first eight minutes came behind the arc. Jessica Howard drilled a pair of three's, with Baylie Boyer, Megan Young, and Mickey Rodriguez also adding tray's.

The halftime score was (34-32), with Galesburg getting just three field goals to go down, two more three's by Howard, and a basket by Shelby Pacheco. Quincy turned the ball over 17 times in the first half, just 10 for GHS. Fletcher the Frosh had 8 points at the halftime break, and would finish with 15.

Galesburg was whistled for the first eight fouls of the second half, to Quincy's 0 fouls. The Streaks were called on 18 fouls in the latter half, and had a total of 30 fouls against them. Neither team excelled at the free throw line, Galesburg (11/27) and Quincy (15/33).

I mentioned toward the end of the fourth quarter that free throws weren't going to win the game for either team, but they did. Trailing by two points, Galesburg missed four consecutive free throws. With less than 0:30 to play, the Streaks trailed (70-67) and had four offensive rebounds and attempted five three-pointers, missing all five shots. Quincy would get two free throws from Fletcher to ice the game, and claim the WB6 win (73-67).

The teams combined for 55 fouls and 60 free throws. The Blue Devils had 29 turnovers, Galesburg commited 18 turnovers. Jessica Howard scored a game-high 18 points and got double-digits from Shelby Pacheco (11) and Mickey Rodriguez (10). Quincy received 15 points apiece from Jordan Fletcher and Darion Stephens (15).

Game 11
Williamsfield vs. Galva

Williamsfield Thanksgiving Tournament

The final game of a tripleheader at the Thanksgiving Tournament in Billtown. Longtime head coach Bob Anderson leads the Billtown Bombers. Anderson holds over 500 career victories at the tiny school (enrollment: 75). Williamsfield has one of the biggest, neatest small school gyms. I also like the broadcast setup, which is set right above the scorers table and one of the benches. I strategically placed the broadcast table directly behind one of the benches, to give listeners an insiders perspective from what's going on along the sidelines.

Following the radio game between Monmouth-Roseville and United, I needed to swap out equipment of this IHSSN broadcast. I also needed to fill out the scorebook for the finale. In between, I caught glimpses of the middle game (Henry vs. Biggsville West Central). With all that work, you better believe I made time to get down to the always-delicious Williamsfield Tournament hospitality room.

The organizers at WHS do a fantastic job through the tournament's run at the hospitality room. I first dove into the dessert, which was a very good chocolate cake. Then, for the main course, the pulled pork barbecue sandwiches....exquisite. I even found a way to put a barbecue stain in my scorebook, LOL. Williamsfield has hosted this tournament since 1982.

Back in the broadcast booth, we were on the air. The Bombers are very low on depth, and will play 6 players the entire game. Really, the starters go the entire game, and the 6th man will play sparingly. Alex Ott is a standout, a now senior. Teammate Justin Ingle is the other go-to, just a sophomore. He was very impressive last year as a freshman.

The final lines for those two. Alex Ott: 30 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals. Justin Ingle: 27 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals. For Galva, Jake Verstraete put up 24 points and 10 rebounds, and had a great second half.

The Galva Wildcats pushed and pushed in the third quarter, trimming a 15-point deficit to 3, but the Bombers pulled ahead by double digits going into the fourth quarter. Galva closed to within four points midway through the final frame, but Billtown hung on for the (72-63) win.

I made a mistake on the drive home. With garmin in tow (only to find the quickest route, and to see my estimated time of arrival), it directed me past the Knoxville McDonalds. Not a good choice for a slightly hungry broadcaster. I also wanted to stay awake for a few hours to update the IHSSN scoreboard. An 11 p.m. coffee is not the best choice for a 5 a.m. wakeup call. I got the scoreboard updated to my liking, staying awake past 1:30, but the caffeine stayed in my body and I was able to put together about three hours or less of sleep, making for a long Tuesday and broadcast #12.

Game 10: Monmouth-Roseville vs. United (Boy's)

Game 10
(11/23/09)
Williamsfield Thanksgiving Tournament
Monmouth-Roseville vs. United

The opening night of the high school boy's basketball season takes me to Williamsfield, better known as "Billtown". The total high school enrollment of the host school, just 75. That's freshman through senior class! More on the Billtown Bombers in the next post.

Always want to get to Williamsfield a little early, a couple times in the past, the phone line has given me troubles. Passed both the Monmouth-Roseville and United buses on I-74 on the way to Williamsfield, located about 20 miles to the east of Galesburg.

Arrive at the gym shortly before the teams, about the only soul in gym. Coach Anderson, along with United assistant Jeremy Sharp were chatting in the locker room. Got everything set up and good to go with time. Interviewed Coach Chuck Grant of the Titans. Mon-Rose has a lot of talent back from last year's team. United coach Jim Noonan showed up with a few minutes to spare after a car breakdown in Galesburg. Fortunately for the Red Storm coach, the right people were in the right places for him to arrive on time.

The game started out fast and furious for the Titans, with a stifling pressure defense, and lights out scoring. One of the best first half efforts of a season opener I've ever seen. The Titans nailed nine three-pointers in the first half, and only committed 5 turnovers, while leading 44-16 at the break.

The second half was a little different, with United coming out with more intensity. Mon-Rose slowed it down a bit with their big lead, and held on for the 66-41 win. Three of the five starters for United were playing football a week ago, getting just enough practices in for the first night of basketball. Several players off the bench were also on the football team. B.J. Salyers and Alex Bresnahan lit it up from outside with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Markus Hunter had some nice inside moves and an outside shot. Hunter's forte is defense, but he has shown glimpses of an offensive explosion on occasion.

Game 9: Galesburg vs. Springfield

Game 9
Galesburg vs. Springfield
(11/21/09)
Galesburg Tournament

A very long day of broadcasting, following a Division-III playoff football game between St. Thomas and Monmouth College. Unprepared for the long day of broadcasts, I forgot my laptop power supply. Fortunately, enough time allowed for me to make the drive from Monmouth back to Macomb, then back up to Galesburg with plenty of time.

This was a highly anticipated matchup, as Springfield took 4th place in Class 3A last year, and returns five of their top seven players from that team, with multiple girls getting Division-One attention. As I arrived at the gym before the fresh/soph game, I noticed two Springfield varsity players napping in the crooks of the bleachers, a funny sight, as one had even brought a pillow.

The Streaks held up early, but the Senators took a 10-point lead after one quarter (26-16). Zahna Medley, the sophomore point guard (receiving interest from Illinois and Missouri early on), picked up two quick fouls in the first two minutes and sat nearly the entire first quarter.

The rest of the team picked up, as Springfield is very deep and talented. SHS outscored GHS 25-16 in the second quarter to lead (51-32) at halftime. Springfield committed 12 fouls in the first half, that saw Medley, along with starters Demi VanderWal and (Fr.) Ashton Williams in foul trouble.

Galesburg outscored the visitors (20-19) in the third quarter, but trailed (70-52). The Streaks just couldn't capitalize on the Springfield turnovers, while the Senators were capitalizing and also dominating the the scoring inside, with most of their points coming in the paint. Both teams turned the ball over 25 times, and the Senators saw many girls in foul trouble throughout the game, but still won the game handily (96-66). This Springfield team is loaded, and should be ranked very high when the AP polls come out. Kelly Korza scored a game-high 20 points for Springfield, while Zahna Medley put up a quiet 19 points. A total of five Senators hit double-digits. Galesburg was led by Jessica Howard's 16 points and Sara Baker's 15 points.

This was the third game in 24 hours for Galesburg, and even with their uptempo run and gun style, they did not seem too gassed. Springfield is just an outstanding ball club.

After week one, I broadcasted 10 games. Nine basketball, one college football. I saw 13 basketball games in the week. In addition to the nine broadcasts, I caught the East Peoria/Alleman and United Township/Illini West games, in addition to the Galesburg/Illini West and Galesburg/Metamora sophomore games.

I was beat after the long Saturday, and decided to couch it. Dinner came from the Mobil station in Galesburg. The typical meal of a road warrior, Combos and a Gatorade, lol.

Game 8
Galesburg vs. Metamora

Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament

The Streaks take the floor for their second game of the week, displaying their new Grinnell-style offense. Getting the fans involved with the game even more, is a promotion teaming up with McDonalds. "3Diculous" T-shirts are on sale for $10, and when the Streaks knock down 13 three-pointers, fans in attendance wearing those shirts get a free triple-cheeseburger.

Metamora struggled to an (0-2) start heading into this Friday night affair. The game followed United Township/Illini West, in which UTHS piled up 85 points on the Chargers. Alleman handled East Peoria in the second matchup of the night.

Galesburg jumped out to a (21-16) first quarter lead, behind nine points from Jessica Howard. The lead stayed at five points through the first half, giving GHS a (38-33) halftime lead. The Streaks handled the ball much better throughout the game, only turning the ball over 20 times, compared to 40+ on Tuesday in the opener. Much less fouls in this game as well.

The Streaks poured on 32 points after the break, in the third quarter behind hot shooting from outside the three-point arc. After three quarters, the Streaks needed just two three-pointers to give fans a triple-cheeseburger. Mickey Rodriguez torched the nets for three three's in the third, while Maddy Boyer, Tai Peachey, Jessica Howard, and Megan Young also knocked in three's. The most exciting of the three's, was the Peachey tray. With just 0:02 remaining in the quarter, Metamora in-bounded, which was turned over at halfcourt. A quick outlet pass to Peachey at the top of the key gave her just enough time to turn around and knock it in at the buzzer.

Galesburg continued their outside magic with four more three-pointers, ensuring fans a McDonalds triple cheeseburger after the game. Four Streaks hit double-digits, led by Jessica Howard's 15 points and Mickey Rodriguez with 14 points. Metamora was paced by Kelsey Nafziger's 16 points, while Ally Friday knocked in 12. Both Redbird standouts, Whitney Rohrbach and Justine Phillips were held in-check, scoring a combined 15 points.

Game 7: Macomb vs. Rockridge

Game 7
Macomb vs. Rockridge
(11/18/09)

The finale of the second night got off to a late start due to the first game getting sent into overtime. The Lady Bombers came in off a fourth quarter run in a season-opening win over Rushville-Industry, while Rockridge started hot against Pleasant Plains on Monday, before fizzling the last three quarters. Stan Day, father of Macomb (Sr.) Ashton Day dropped off a camouflage hat, after reading my column this week on my duck hunt on Spring Lake. I had mentioned my lack of camo in my closet. The Rockets jumped out to a 15-9 first quarter lead behind a balanced scoring attack, and would lead 26-18 at halftime. Macomb stormed back in the second half pulling to within two points heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Bombers had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds as Taylor Claudon set up from the right wing, but the shot was just off target. The Rockets would hold off the Bombers down the stretch and claim the 44-41 victory. Emily Watkins led Rockridge with 14 points, while Macomb received 12 points from Cassie Combs.

Game 6: Knoxville vs. Rushville-Industry

Game 6
Knoxville vs. Rushville-Industry
(11/18/09)

This game was over just minutes into the game. The Blue Bullets jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter, and would hold a 20-3 lead after one quarter, and a 36-6 halftime lead. Hannah Weedman (Evansville-bound), who scored her 1,000th career point on Monday, added 15 more points to that total. Weedman tallied just over two quarters of action as this game got out of hand. She went (7-8) from the free throw line. Teammate Makenzie Frank dropped a trio of three-pointers and scored 11 points for the Blue Bullets. Despite the lopsided loss (61-23), Rushville-Industry committed just 21 turnovers.

Game 5: Havana vs. Pleasant Plains

Game 5
Havana vs. Pleasant Plains
(11/18/09)

Another key matchup at the Macomb Lady Bomber Classic. This game started the second night of the tournament. For the second straight game, the Plains Cardinals started slowly, trailing 14-4 after the first quarter. Just like Monday, Plains would rally in the second quarter, and took a halftime lead (26-24). It was all Havana in the third quarter, as the Ducks outscored the Cardinals 21-9. Macy Brown (Jr.) had a big third quarter, with 10 points, including a 4-4 effort in that quarter from the free throw line. The Cardinals outscored Havana by ten points in the fourth quarter to force the extra session. Marissa Jenkins had a huge second half for Plains (14 points). Havana would outlast Plains (63-57) when it was all said and done. Brown scored a game-high 23 points, while Samantha Ellsworth (So.) pitched in 13 points. Jenkins scored a team-high 21 points for Plains, while Kelsey Owens added 11 points. This was Havana's second overtime in as many games, after falling to Knoxville in the opening night of the tournament.

Game 4: Galesburg vs. Illini West

Game 4
Galesburg vs. Illini West
(11/17/09)

I had been eagerly anticipating this game since I received the schedule. Galesburg coach Evan Massey switch to the Grinnell-style offense in the off-season. A goal-oriented system, in which the Streaks goals this year will be to force the opposition into 26 turnovers, 72 field goal attempts, 36 three-point attempts, and getting 40% of misses back on offensive rebounds. Meanwhile, coach Zach Keene employs a pressuring defense and a fast-paced system.

The pen hit the scorebook fast and furious right off the bat, as I had GHS forcing seven turnovers in less than a minute to start the game. As a matter of fact, that 26 forced turnover goal was met with 2:13 to play in the 2nd quarter. Galesburg went 11-players deep, while Illini West went 9-deep. The outcome went to the host Streaks 88-80 in a wild one. Galesburg led 75-62 in the fourth quarter, but the Chargers stormed back to make it an 80-76 game at one point late in the fourth quarter.

Here are some eye-popping numbers. A grand total of 85 turnovers, that's right, 85 turnovers. Illini West had 47 turnovers, according to my turnovers stats. There were 78 free throw attempts by both teams, which would put that at 15th in IHSA history. Galesburg's 51 free-throw attempts would place them in a tie for 10th all-time. The Streaks 35 made free throws would put them in a tie for 5th all-time in the IHSA. The teams also combined for 55 fouls.

Game 3: Macomb vs. Rushville-Industry

Game 3
Macomb vs. Rushville-Industry
(11/16/09)

The third game of the season opening tripleheader in girl's basketball at the Lady Bomber Classic. A very sluggish start offensively for both teams. Score was tied 8-8 after one quarter. The first three quarters were marred by turnovers, fouls, and jump balls. A great defensive battle between the Rockets Breanna Moore and the Bombers Taylor Claudon. Both scrappy defenders gave each other fits down the floor throughout the game. Rushville-Industry led 22-21 heading into the fourth quarter, but a 19-4 run in the final eight minutes for Macomb gave them the (40-26) win. Cassie Combs came up big throughout the game, especially in the fourth quarter where she scored 8 points. Combs had a double-double (14 points/12 rebounds).

Game Two: Knoxville vs. Havana

Game 2
Knoxville vs. Havana

I looked at this game to be one of the best games in the tournament. It didn't surprise, lasting to overtime. The Ducks lost four starters from last year's team, but coach Jerry Wilson went very deep and several of this year's players saw varsity time as freshmen or sophomores last year. I liked to call last year's rotation a bunch of interchangeable parts. Still, it's tough to break such a well-oiled machine. The Ducks appeared in a Class 1A Supersectional last year, forcing Brimfield to double overtime before falling to the Class 1A 4th place Indians. Knoxville advanced to a Class 2A Sectional a season ago under Matt Gibson. Hannah Weedman highlights the Blue Bullets. She just signed on to play at the Unversity of Evansville. She is flanked by another post, a rangy (6'0" Sophomore) Haley Jones, who missed half of last season with a knee injury. Knoxville also played a freshman several minutes, Tessa Jones. Haley Jones is one of those players who always ends up on the floor, whether it be falling on a rebound, diving after loose balls, or in-your-face defense. Abby Ball, running the point for KHS, is also scrappy. Havana controlled this game through much of the game, but went to a stall offense, which backfired, and Knoxville battled back to force overtime. It was all Blue Bullets in the extra session, winning by seven points. Hannah Weedman had a game-high 18 points, followed by Abby Ball's 17 points. Ball went 11-15 from the free throw line, including 10-12 in the fourth quarter and in overtime.

Game 1: Pleasant Plains vs. Rockridge

Game One

Pleasant Plains vs. Rockridge
I felt that Pleasant Plains would overmatch Rockridge in this game. The Rockets lost most, if not all, of their starters from last season, and returned a limited amount of girls with significant varsity experience. On the other hand, Pleasant Plains returned five starters from a (27-5) team. I was quite shocked, when Rockridge jumped out to a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. That would be the end of it for coach Paul Kastner's crew, with the Cardinals rolling off an 8-0 run to start the 2nd quarter, and outscoring the Rockets (16-5) in that frame. The second half started much the same way, with Rockridge failing to score in the first four minutes. I love the hustle and defense of Abby Bruce. I interviewed coach Kastner after the game and mentioned her hustle and skinned knees she probably gets. He brought up the fact that she is wearing a headband from a concussion suffered last year....that's hustle! No surprises why she earned defensive MVP honors at Plains last year. For Rockridge, I was impressed by the scrappy play of Kaylee Moseley. Tia Fuhr and Kayla Macke, who each played varsity time last year did a nice job as well.

Leading Scorer: Kelsey Owens (Pleasant Plains): 23 points

Story of the Game: Turnovers. Much to be expected for the first game of the season.

And So It Begins

Three games in one night, down to 97 games left to broadcast in the quest. I will write a blog entry for each game covered in the quest for 100. As I set up the first game, here are some notes about the Macomb Lady Bomber Classic 2009. Brand new scoreboards in the Washington Street Gym. Very, very nice! For those of you unfamiliar with Macomb, the Washington St. Gym is located in the old Macomb High School building, which also houses Spoon River College-Macomb campus now. The programs for the tournament were literally hot off the presses, being delivered less than a half hour before the first game's tipoff. Fortunately, I had time to make chicken scratchings of the Rockridge roster, since they failed to make the cut in the program, and I had also not received one from the school, but all went well. Great to see many familiar faces around the gym, including MHS Athletic Director Dave Bartlett, girl's coach Jeff Thorman, former Macomb JV coach Jim Scott, among several others. Now, on to the games!!!

15 Mintues From Game One

IHSSN has staked claim at the Washington Street Gym for three games tonight. My first game will be Pleasant Plains against Rockridge, followed by Havana vs. Knoxville, with Macomb and Rushville-Industry in the nightcap. Both Plains and Rockridge are warming up. The special Lady Bomber Classic programs are hot off the presses, arrived about 30 minutes before game time tonight. Spoke with both coaches and here are tonight's starting lineups.

Game 2 Preview (Lady Bomber Classic)

GAME TWO PREVIEW
Havana vs. Knoxville

The game of the night should be the middle matchup in the Washington Street Gym on Monday night. Havana, coming off a Supersectional appearance faces Knoxville, who advanced to a Class 2A Sectional a year ago. The Ducks graduated four starters last year, but this was a team that went nine-deep and had a lot of interchangeable parts. With that said, Havana should be in for another 20+ win season under coach Jerry Wilson, but without that leadership from last season, but could go through some minor growing pains at the beginning of the season as they adjust to a slightly changed lineup. Meanwhile, Knoxville lost a few good seniors, but returns Evansville-bound Hannah Weedman (6'3"), along with Haley Jones (6'0" So.). Jones missed about half of last season with an injury. Knoxville has a distinct height advantage, with Havana being a very quick, guard-oriented team. It will be interesting how these two teams matchup with that differential. It would be a shame for these two teams to meet up right out of the opening gates, but with the switch to the Prairieland Conference for Knoxville, the two teams will match up again in conference play later this season.

The Quest Game 1 Preview

The quest begins at 5:00 on Monday. The first step in the journey to broadcasting 100 games this winter. Monday night features a tripleheader on IHSSN.net. Thanks to our friends at Network1Sports, who host the IHSSN-based streams. Here is a preview of game number one from the Lady Bomber Classic at Macomb's Washington Street Gym.

Pleasant Plains, coming off of a (27-5) season, looks to begin it's run tonight against Rockridge. The Rockets graduated a bulk of their starters from last season. The lone starter returning is Jen Krueger, while Ericka Price, Dalinda Widdop, Kayla Macke, and Hillary Dowell all saw minutes at the varsity level. Meanwhile, Plains returns their entire starting five (Marissa Jenkins, Abby Bruce, Kaylyn Yakel, Kelsey Owens, & Quinn Stitt). Both Jenkins and Owens were 4th team All-Staters by the IBCA. There are big expectations at Pleasant Plains in 2009-10.

The Scoreboard Cometh

Monday night (11/16) marks the tip-off of the 2009-10 high school basketball season, with girl's Thanksgiving Tournaments beginning. Boy's hoops starts a week from Monday (11/23). With the new season, IHSSN will have a new scoreboard up and running starting Monday. The scoreboard will be a Google spreadsheet that will get updated almost instantly when I add scores each night, unlike the old fashioned save, FTP, upload, etc. IHSSN is also reaching out to coaches and athletic directors to get final scores with leading scorers upon the final horn to better serve our large scoreboard following. An exciting time at IHSSN.net. Coming up later tonight, a preview of the first night of IHSSN.net broadcasts on Monday from the Macomb Lady Bomber Classic, a trifecta of games for your listening pleasure!

Meet the Streaks....Basketball at a Fever Pitch

Just days away from the debut of the 2009-10 basketball season. Tonight, I partook (is that a word?) in the Meet the Streaks Girl's Basketball night at John Thiel Gymnasium in Galesburg. The event had a freshman vs. freshman scrimmage, sophomores facing off, and the main event was four quarters (8 minutes each) of the varsity playing male faculty members. This was a barnburner, in your face, fast-paced contest. The faculty roared back in the 4th quarter for the win. This marked the mainstream public's first witnessing of coach Evan Massey's Grinnell-style offense at Galesburg. It should be a fun season, and look forward to broadcasting most of the Streaks girls games on 1590 WAIK. Next week marks the start of the girl's hoops season, and IHSSN.net will be covering many girl's games this year, plus the revamping of both our boy's and girl's basketball scoreboards. I will blog about the new scoreboard, and the start of the games on Friday.

The Journey Begins in 12 Days

The journey of 100 games begins with a tripleheader on Monday November 16th. The Macomb Lady Bomber Classic at the Washington Street Gym is the setting. Opening the season will be the first broadcast on IHSSN between Pleasant Plains and Rockridge. A great battle will be seen in the second game between Havana and Knoxville, while Macomb and Rushville-Industry square off in the nightcap. IHSSN will return to the tournament on Wednesday (11/18). My fourth broadcast of the 2009-10 season will be on Tuesday (11/17) at Galesburg between the host Silver Streaks and the Illini West Chargers.
